Your guide to Tintagel

Welcome to Tintagel, England

There’s something otherworldly about Tintagel. This enchanting village, situated on the rugged North Cornwall coast, will always be connected to the legend of King Arthur and the wizard Merlin. The myth-making centres on the slightly sinister ruins of the 13th-century Tintagel Castle, which is now one of the most popular attractions in the United Kingdom. Built up on the cliffs and glowering down on the village below, the two halves of the castle are now connected for the first time in 500 years thanks to a stunning new footbridge. The village itself offers a great deal to the traveller, Arthurian or otherwise, including a toy museum and the Old Post Office, a 14th-century farmhouse, plus many quaint cafes and gift shops. There are surfing hotspots a few miles away, and plenty of walking trails along dramatic coastline routes.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Tintagel

With 250,000 people a year visiting the castle and the local area, the height of summer can feel cramped in Tintagel. If possible it’s best to book one of the area’s holiday cottages for the slightly quieter months of May, June, or September, where you’ll still encounter (hopefully) some glorious weather without the crowds. Situated right on the coast, Tintagel might feel chilly at any time of year, and there is always the chance of a shower, so make sure you’re dressed for any climatic eventuality. Tintagel Carnival takes place at the start of August every year, with a festive atmosphere and a highly competitive scarecrow competition.

Top things to do in Tintagel

Tintagel Castle

A steep track from the village via the Vale of Avalon leads you to the magnificent ruins of Tintagel Castle, steeped in Arthurian mystery and legend. The new footbridge, linking various parts of the castle ruins, is a wonder in itself. Set in breathtaking scenery, Tintagel Castle is a perfect place to immerse yourself in history and then enjoy a picnic on the headland. But be warned: The castle gets busy and entrance is via timed ticket, so make sure you book ahead.

The Old Post Office

Post offices were merely a twinkle in a future philatelist’s eye when this remarkable medieval dwelling was built more than 600 years ago. It was originally a farmhouse that was slowly modified over the centuries — the thatched roof was replaced by the unique wavy slate version. Finally it became the mail centre for the village in the 1870s. Now in the care of the National Trust, The Old Post Office contains fascinating historical details plus a spectacular cottage garden.

St Nectan’s Glen

If you’re planning to travel to the locale with the intention of becoming an Arthurian Knight of the Round Table in some way―and who isn’t?―then you really need to pop by this waterfall near to the village. According to legend, potential knights were required to pass through the falls and into a pool to be cleansed and reborn as warriors. But even those not seeking the chivalrous path will be enchanted by this truly mystical, mysterious place.
