Your guide to Weston-super-Mare

All About Weston-super-Mare

Weston-super-Mare is a quintessential seaside town in North Somerset, less than an hour’s drive from Bristol. Weston is best known for its expansive beach, where you can swim and go kite-surfing, waterskiing, or kayaking in the warmer months, or simply take a stroll along the promenade and enjoy the sights. After a day at the beach, stop by the Weston Museum to learn more about the town’s artistic and cultural history or visit the iconic Grand Pier, home to rides, arcade games, a museum, and a vast pavilion.

Weston-super-Mare is a great base for exploring the surrounding area, including the town of Portishead, where you’ll find excellent restaurants and bars, and Clevedon, which has a heritage-listed pier. Within just a few kilometres from Weston-super-Mare, you’ll also find nature reserves like Brean Down and Sand Point, ideal for cycling or hiking. The nearby Avalon Marshes Centre is also a great spot for birdwatching, especially at sunrise and sunset.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Weston-super-Mare

Summer is the most popular season for visiting Weston-super-Mare, especially during school holidays. The water is at its warmest, and the days are at their longest — ideal for swimming, relaxing on the beach, or enjoying the many water sports on offer. Spring and autumn bring cooler weather, though these times can be ideal for cycling, hiking, and discovering some of the nearby nature reserves. Winter gets quite cold in this area, and it usually snows for a few days each year. Though not exactly typical beach weather, this is when the town is at its quietest, and it can be perfect for simply relaxing and curling up in front of a cosy fire.

Weston-super-Mare also hosts several events throughout the year, including the Weston Air Festival in June, when the Armed Forces’ aircraft put on an elaborate display, and the Weston Carnival in November, which commemorates Guy Fawkes with a night of bonfires, fireworks, and performances.

Top things to do in Weston-super-Mare

Weston Museum

One of the town’s key attractions, the Weston Museum was established in 1861 and provides insight into the social, cultural, and maritime history of Weston-super-Mare. There are revolving displays of more than 50,000 artifacts, including paintings, fossils, and Roman archaeological finds.

Wells Cathedral

About a 50-minute drive southeast of Weston-super-Mare is the town of Wells, where you can discover some of the region’s medieval history. In the heart of the town is this striking Gothic cathedral, a heritage landmark that was built in the 13th century and the first cathedral built in this style in England.

Bishop’s Palace and Gardens

Also in Wells, you’ll find the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, a stunning and dramatic medieval palace that was used by the bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years. The structure is surrounded by a moat, and there are ancient springs here that have been sought for their healing properties for hundreds of years.
