Hiking with Goats
A Ten Apple Farm goat hike is a two hour recreational and educational goat experience. You'll meet your hosts (and our herd of Alpine dairy goats), and hear about their 16 years of experience with goats and living on a small family farm. Once we've met the goats and the many other animals residents of the farm, we’ll set off on a hike through the Ten Apple Farm woods with the goats and Philip our sheep! The hike consists of an approximately one and a half mile loop trail through our woods on lightly groomed trails. Along the way we’ll talk about goats as pack animals, what they eat, and you’ll learn a thing or two about raising and caring for goats. There's lots of time for interacting with the goats, asking questions, or just soaking in the Maine woods and these adorable, fun animals. We end the experience with fresh goat milk and homemade cookies! Please note: Children must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult. 5 and 6 year olds should plan to hold a parent's hand during the hike. (Children under 4 must be carried). Other things to note: The hike is not strenuous, but there is a little bit of steep terrain in 2 spots. We have rope railings on the trail to assist with getting up and down in those spots, but guests who have bad knees, hips, or other difficulties with uneven or steep terrain should be aware.

Create a small wooden bowl
I can take up to 2 people per class and we will make ONE wood bowl together. I will start by showing a couple of videos of what we will be doing, followed by safety instructions before we dive in. No prior experience is required. I provide active hands-on instruction, demonstrations and enthusiastic encouragement. You will make all the creative decisions of wood type, bowl shape and size etc. I offer a selection of woods to choose from including locally harvested hardwoods purchased from me directly on the day of the class. NOTE! I can schedule this event any time or day - just let me know what day or time you want. Other things to note: Plan on getting covered in shavings! Wear work clothes and roll up long sleeves, remove watches and bracelets and long hair must be tied back. I will provide all safety equipment and advice. A materials fee of $12 to $30 covers the wood blank.
Come Sail with Us
Guests will board from the dock and we will take a tour of the boat, briefly discuss safe sailing practices and answer any questions. We will sail on the Saco River into Saco Bay and view Wood Island Lighthouse, Biddeford Pool & Old Orchard Beach. We will keep on the look out for marine wildlife. We have seen seals, porpoises, sharks and even whales. We will return to the same dock on which the guests boarded.
Hands On With Magical Miniature Horses
We will meet for a short orientation outside the barn. We will then introduce you to "the herd" and select a few horses to demo how to approach them, halter and lead them, groom them. You will then be helped to choose your own horse for the day. If the weather is cooperative, we can go for a short trail walk and perhaps see some of the wildlife who seem to be more comfortable and come closer when we humans are attached to a horse! Q and A is ongoing. All questions are welcome, and we will make every effort to gear the experience to the guests' individual ages and interests. Some may simply want the 'therapy value' of touching and communicating. Some may want information on how we care for the horses. Some may want a demo on how we show them in competition. Energetic guests may want to take a horse over a set of appropriately scaled jumps or obstacles. All can be arranged, and everyone in the group can do something different, as long as I can maintain my ability to be six places at once. :) We can also provide a special occasion for any age guest and his or her celebrants, with appropriate refreshments that you bring along or order here. Other things to note Please dress appropriately for the weather. Closed-toe shoes, please. Sunscreen and bug repellent are handy seasonally. THE MAGICAL MINIS EXPERIENCE MAKES A FABULOUS, ONE OF A KIND GIFT!

Sail on the Schooner Fame of Salem
Haul up the sails! Take the tiller! Or just chill with an adult beverage while our historic schooner slides through Salem Sound past lighthouses, forts, and waterfront homes. The captain and crew will explain the significance of the FAME, privateering, and the War of 1812. The firing of the cannon is always a highlight! We'll motor out from Pickering Wharf in downtown Salem and call for volunteers to help raise the sails. Depending on the wind, we may shape a course toward Beverly, Marblehead, or head straight out toward the islands! Our interactive crew point out landmarks, explain the operation of the schooner, and mix drinks with equal facility. The sails last roughly an hour and forty minutes. When we return to Pickering Wharf, you're right in the heart of downtown Salem — perfectly placed for a meal, a drink, or a stroll! Note: We will not sail if steady rain, high winds, or thick fog are expected; you will be refunded. If do we cancel a sail, we will reach out to you thru air bnb. Dress for the weather — you are exposed to the elements on our 1812 schooner! This trip is NOT appropriate for infants or toddlers. But once kids are 5 years old, they really enjoy it! The schooner is certified for 49 passengers plus crew. But since 2021 we are sailing at 60% capacity, which means there will be a maximum of 30 guests on your sail.
Plum Island Birdwatching
We will be birdwatching at the famous Parker River NWR on Plum Island for exciting migrant and coastal birds. I will lead you to birding hotspots and view points for locating, observing, and identifying the refuge's diverse birds. I will let you identify the birds yourself, or provide identification tips or answers depending on your preference. Identification by birdsong and call lessons is also offered. We will attempt to build a large list of species that we observe and this list will be submitted to the eBird database of bird observations for scientific usage. If you do not see a date and time fits your schedule, send an inquiry or request to me. I might be able to make the schedule work for you or your group. Other related AirBNB Experiences offered in the region are Marginal Way Birding (Ogunquit, ME), Birding the Middlesex Fells (Boston, MA), Mt. Washington Valley (North Conway, NH), Biddeford Pool Birdwatching (Biddeford, ME) Inquire how to reserve these other locations through AirBNB experiences. Dress for field birding conditions. Count on lower temperatures and higher winds than inland. All ability levels welcome. Trip provides 2-hr experience (recommend booking two trips for 4 hrs birding, ... or ask if adding on additional 2-hr block is possible).
