“A landmark market in a covered arcade is where the locals shop for fresh fish, meat, vegetables, pickles and more. In addition to fresh and prepared foods, some shops sell bentō and have lunch counters. It's one block east of Sakai-suji, about 10 minutes' walk from central Namba. ”

Temple or shrine
“One of the most interesting features of this temple is its huge bronze statue of Confucius, five meters high and one of the tallest in the world. In its look, the building is more Chinese in style, which is appropriate as it’s a Confucian temple. Historically it’s also significant because the modern Japanese educational system has deep roots here. Near the statue of Confucius is a very dramatic Chinese pistache tree. These are very rare to find in Japan—this particular one grew from a seedling planted near Confucius’s grave in northeastern China, and was then shipped here to Japan. It’s considered a holy tree in Confucianism.”

Toy / Game Store
“When otaku dream of heaven, it probably looks a lot like this giant go-to store for manga and anime. Eight storeys are piled high with comic books and DVDs, action figures and cell art just for starters. The 5th floor, in all its pink splendour, is devoted to women’s comics, while the 4th floor is for men. Mandarake’s original branch is in Nakano . Other branches include Shibuya and one in Ikebukuro that specialises in manga for women. ”

“Isen Honten has been around Ueno for more than 80 years now which is famous for its extremely tender pork cutlet that you can even cut it in half by using chopsticks. Being able to "cut with chopsticks" is one of the best compliment a food can get when we want to express the tenderness of the food. The birth place of the Tonkatsu sandwich, where you would often find them at the train stations, is here at Isen Ueno which you might have tried them before in the past. When you are in Isen, there are several good choices on the menu you would have to decide which one to order from Yawaraka Tonkatsu that is super tender pork cutlet prepared with low heat, Toku Rosu Katsu to enjoy the delicious standard pork cutlet that represents the 80 years of history, and of course the Katsu Sandwich which has already become well known in Japan. The sauce they are using probably has some sourness in it unlike most of the Tonkatsu restaurants that offer relatively sweeter sauce, but it is absolutely marvelous. The decor, on the hand, leaves the ambience of Showa times that reminds locals of good old times of Japan which seems quite retro for such famous place. Even though the building is old, the restaurant is kept tidy and these are the reasons why it has been the most loved restaurant since its foundation on 1930. ”

“In business since 1925, Shinsuke is pretty much the platonic ideal of an izakaya : long cedar counter, 'master' in happi (traditional short coat) and hachimaki (traditional headband) and smooth-as-silk dai-ginjo (premium grade sake). The only part that seems out of place is the friendly staff who go out of their way to explain the dishes in English. Really, this is the kind of place that should be intimidating for travellers, but isn't at all, and the food – contemporary updates of classics – is fantastic. Don't miss the kitsune raclette – deep-fried tofu stuffed with raclette cheese. ”
