Sightseeing

Freetown Christiania is a hippie commune of Copenhagen and a must-see, full of vibrancy with a gritty edge. Originally an abandoned military base, it was founded in 1971 by squatters and artists as a "social experiment".

Arts & Culture

This is a well organized art gallery, the main collection divided into three main sections: European Art from the 14th-18th centuries, Nordic Art from the 18th-19th centuries, and Modern Art from the 20th century. The historic building has a new section at the back to hold the modern art. The collection has some nice highlights - Rubens, Bruegel, Matisse, Munch, Modigliani. You have to leave your bags in lockers in the basement (these are free). There's a good cafe underneath the modern wing, though it's quite expensive. You're given a badge at the entrance so you can come and go throughout the day without problems.

Shopping

If you want a one-stop place to shop, Magasin Du Nord is an absolute must and has its flagship store located on Kongens Nytorv immediately opposite the metro. While not the cheapest in Copenhagen, most of your major Nordic brands are represented in this sprawling department store. Magasin was founded in 1868 and boasts a massive building overflowing with all things Danish fashion and design.
