Experience the real Jamaica here in Portland, one of the most beautiful places in the world - clean, clear water and lush rainforest, white sand beaches and coral reefs. Meet friendly people who enjoy sharing the plentiful fresh food with you.
Reach Falls has the cleanest, clear water with a beautiful turquoise colour because of the minerals. Adventure seekers can hire a guide and walk up the river to the rabbit hole, where they jump down into a cave and swim under the rocks and back out to the open.

My community beach, Winnifred Beach, is taken care of by local people who rescued it from being sold to private developers. Experience real people, a cool vibe, delicious freshly prepared fish, lobster and other Jamaican dishes for lunch. Chill your body in the crystal turquoise water or simply walk on the beautiful sand. There is good snorkelling out on the reef. Local crafts people have souvenirs for sale. Drink a jelly coconut water and eat the jelly after. This place closes down at dusk as there is no electricity.

This 50 acre property is one of the most beautiful on the island and has been owned by the Weston family of Canada (Loblaws) for fifty years. My favourite thing to do is let the crystal clear river current take me down the river and into the sea. It’s fun to climb onto the swing and swing over the river too. The sand at Frenchman’s is the softest, whitest sand and swimming there is a joy. Rent a lounge chair and enjoy the friendly waiter service of the restaurant and bar right on the beach.

If you love to surf, this is the beach for you! Want to try it? Lessons and equipment are available. It’s a really fun beach to swim at because of the big waves and soft sand. After swimming, you can shower in the outdoor showers, change in the changeroom and walk up the hill to the famous Boston Jerk centre, the original home of jerk pork and chicken. I recommend Bumpy’s jerk chicken sausage, a unique creation by Bumpy. He will get you any other food you want. Don’t miss the roasted breadfruit!

This is undeveloped, rugged, windy beauty! The longest beach in Portland with many cool spots to hang out and enjoy some reggae, red stripe and Jamaican food.

Experience a Jungle Bar at the top of Richmond Hill (Bonnieview) in Port Antonio. The rasta farmer owners are very cool and the view of the John Crow Mountains is enchanting.

Sightseeing

This is a fabulous day trip from Port Antonio for adventure lovers. Drive to Buff Bay and turn left into B1 highway which tajes you up into the Blue Mountains. You can stop at the Blue Mountain Bicycle Tours for coffee and then proceed on the very narrow and winding road up to Section. Stay to the right and follow the road to Holywrll Gap where you will be at the top of the mountain range looking down at Kingston far below. The road takes you through Newcastle, with its picturesque red roofs. This is the Jamaican army’s training camp and you may see soldiers as the road goes through the area where they train. As you go down the mountain look for EITS (Europe in the Summer) cafe, a great place to have lunch. Continue further down to the Creighton Coffee Estate on the left. They have an excellent tour for $25 U S which includes nicely packaged souvenirs of Blue Mountain coffee. The exclusive Strawberry Hill owned by Island Records Chris Blackwell is a short distance down the road from the coffee estate. You might be allowed in for lunch or a look around. A little further down the road is Irishtown and Cafe Blue. They have cheesecakes and other desserts here. Give yourself time to get back down the mountain before dark! Drive back the same way you came. Enjoy the view!
