Sightseeing

1.5 miles (5 minute drive) from Cone Mt. Cottage. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the Manor House or a hike up the gravel carriage trails to the Fire Tower for spectacular 360 degree views. We like to hike from the Manor House to the field just past the burial site for the Cone Family. The views from the field are excellent and it is way less time/effort than getting up to the Fire Tower. It takes us about 40 minutes out and back with the baby stroller.

2.2 miles (5 minute drive) from Cone Mt. Cottage. Walk or run the .9 mile loop around the lake or enjoy any of the other 25 miles worth of carriage trails throughout the park. Fishing is also permitted. If we are going for a relaxing family walk, we come here.

3 miles (6 minute drive) from Cone Mt. Cottage. Enjoy a picnic alongside the stream and/or hike the trails. Boone Fork Trail located in the park is a 5 mile loop hike, but if you want to go out and back for something shorter, go counter-clockwise on the loop, it’s much more scenic along the river. Drive a few more minutes up the parkway to Price Lake to rent kayaks or canoes.

My favorite hike in the area. Spectacular views without a lot of effort. Stop at the observation decks and turn around or hike all the way to the top. I would consider this a moderate hike with some narrow parts of the trail and a bit of an elevation climb. Milepost 302.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Rent tubes and float down the New River (ironically one of the oldest rivers in the world). The water can be chilly, even in the summer, but the scenery is beautiful and worth the 35 minute drive from Cone Mt. Cottage.
