Food scene

A regional cuisine favorite is Poutine. French fries, with curd cheese smothered in gravy. The main building suffered from a major fire. There is a food truck in its place until the restaurant is rebuilt. Still great local fare.

https://rainbowgrille.com/ A good mix between rustic and luxury. When rainbow trout is on the menu it's usually caught locally. The drive to get there is great for sight seeing. If you go at night you might even spot a moose along side of the road.

The best coffee in the area, because it's the only coffee shop in the area. Locals are anxious for the french bakery (Le Rendezvous) to come back.

Easy-medium level 30-60min. hike depending on athletic ability. One of the best hikes around. Cliff top view of secluded Little Averill Lake. As if you've stepped into a prehistoric era. Barely any houses visible from the summit. Peregrin Falcons can often be spotted nesting on the cliffs. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/vermont/brousseau-mountain

City advice

What to pack

A bathing suit and some pool noodles or a Kayak if you can.

Fresh, clean lakes and streams abound in every direction. Really good fishing if you know what I know.
Travelling with kids

Huge park and playground not in plain sight

Travel south from the house on route 102 for about 400ft., down a slight hill and look on your right. The Canaan town recreational park has a basketball court, tennis courts, an exercise course/walking loop and playground structures.
