Swallow Cottage - Local Area Guide

Food scene

This is my ‘go to’ local pub. It is possible to walk here from Swallow Cottage in around 1 hour but cycling is better. Alternatively, 10 minutes drive in the car through lovely quiet lanes. The bar is full of locals enjoying the tip top quality real ales. The restaurant serves quite typical pub food but it is fresh, tasty and well done. Last time I eat here, the deserts were obviously home made and delicious. Worth calling ahead to make a reservation.

20 mins drive from the cottage. A small menu, using ingredients from local suppliers. It’s got a quiet, ‘old school’ restaurant vibe but one of the best Sunday Lunches (roast beef) I can ever remember tasting. They have a lovely garden which you can also eat in when the weather is good. Check and book ahead as they are not open every day.

Traditional looking pub at the front with lovely modern dining room overlooking walled garden in an extension to the rear. It’s all about the tapas and sharing plates. Informal and great fun atmosphere. Great flavours. Recommended. Only 15 minute drive from the Cottage.

Set in a deer park, only 15 mins drive from the cottage, this pub and restaurant is pretty special. Drop in for a drink and watch the deer wandering by or dine in the restaurant where the chef cooks on a roaring fire (even in the summer!). If you want to eat, definitely book ahead!

Best fish and chips in Cromer is from ‘No.1 Cromer’, 1 New Street, NR27 9HP. Takeaway on ground floor (queues can get long at peak times). The sit in restaurant on 1st floor is recommended for the lovely views over Cromer Pier, the sea and along the coast. Sit in restaurant has a more extensive fish menu (as well as the traditional fish & chips). Book ahead and ask for a table by the window.

The stripped floorboards, real fire and sea views give the Red Lion Hotel a nice & relaxed vibe. Lovely selection of real ales and ciders. Bar area with separate restaurant. Sip a beer and watch the waves rolling in on Cromer beach. Recommended!
