Designed by gothic architect Pugin, the church was commissioned by the Alton family with no expense spared. Known as Pugin’s Gem and locally as the Red Church, it features gothic red stonework, stained glass, hand painted walls and Minton floor tiles with lots of gold throughout. Part of a cluster including the church, old convent and the school.

This is Dimingsdale, though for a starting point and parking, head for the Ramblers Retreat and the free car park is in front, giving access to the forstry, lakes and the old railway line and canal. This is where the chained oak resides.
