Customs and culture

Removal of shoes and showering before using community pool

It is customary to remove shoes when entering a residence, which of course helps prevent tracking dirt. Also, just about every community, including Stykkishólmur, has a public pool facility that have heated pools and hot pots for locals and guests. The requirement is to remove clothing and shower with soap (provided) in the locker room area prior to entering the water as the pools are not heavily chlorinated as they are in the U.S. and other countries.
