Food Scene

This is a must. It's all seafood and you'll probably need a reservation. I recommend ordering thegrilled lapas (limpets), maybe some cracas (barnacles), and the fish of the day--everyone speaks English and they'll make recommendations. Get a bottle of Vinho Verde too.

When you're sick of typical Portuguese food, this place is great for salads and lighter fare. It's also good for picking up traditional Azorean gifts.

This is the best traditional Azorean food on the island. It's a lot of heavy food--sausages, beef, etc. Good for a lunch if you're near Biscoitos.

It's right on the marina, so it's pretty. The food is a little more modern and upscale. It would be good for lunch or dinner if you want to be in the city.

A solid restaurant with typical fare--both fish and meat. But it also has a snack bar, so this is a good place if you just got in and want a quick meal and don't feel like going down to the city.

This is where our local island cheese comes from. It's a cheese factory, but it's fun to go, grab a plate of cheese and bread and drink a beer after a day at Cinco Ribeiras beach.

Drinks & Nightlife

This place has a good restaurant and also is the center of the local late night scene. The only place where you can get a real craft cocktail.

Drive up to the top and there's a vantage point for you to see much of the island. Right before you enter, there's a really great park (on the left) for young children to play.

Praia is the other major city besides Angra. The whole island is divided into two major regions: Angra and Praia. Angra is better, of course :), but Praia has a sandy beach and it's own town.

Parks & Nature

This is the biggest swimming area on the island. Some people have summer homes over there. If it's sunny, bring a towel and stay for a while. Grab some corn on the cob at one of the stands.

Probably the 3rd biggest swim spot on the island (behind Biscoitos and Silveira). There are also 2 other beaches nearby, Salga and Salgueiros. Buzios is a pretty good (but $$) Italian restaurant at Porto Martins.

I love driving through this part of the island. It's forested and woodsy and there are cliffs along the ocean. It's completely different and unexpected. You may have to make some left turns to do some real exploring along the ocean. Very worth it
