Food Scene

Maranui is a great cafe on the sand in Lyall Bay. Lines are often long for lunch but sneak in mid-morning or afternoon for a snack like a local. I dig the lifesaver club decor and the food is yummy!

A hip little spot with all the yummy salads of Maranui but a little less of the wait. Great for morning coffees and check-ins with the cool kids baristas.

The steak! The steak! It's a good, good steak. There are probably other good things on the menu as well but the steak is pretty damn good.

I like this little cafe for dolling itself up in the old basement furniture. They also do a fine job supporting local arts-- lots of readings and music. Plus, good fries and beer.

Mmm. Try their Mexican Scramble breakfast. It's not really that Mexican (because, you know, this is NZ) but it comes with fried tortillas. Who doesn't like fried tortillas? Great coffee too.

Essentials

Okay, this spot on the map is in town but there's another one about a mile from our house. This is where you're going to find the good-for-you-good-for-everyone stuff. Always good for some soup too!

Sightseeing

Alright, it's a zoo. But it's a cute, little zoo and even if you don't go in, consider a little hike around it in the morning to hear the lions waking up. Chuffle, chuffle, roar.

A great hike to grab some incredible shots of the Wellington coastline. Don't miss this one. Just getting there along Breaker Bay Road will take your breath away.

You have to go here. It's the Te Papa. And it's free. Check out the earthquake shack, the giant squid and the Maraes upstairs.
