Ideally located just four miles west of Chichester and on the edge of the South Downs National Park, the Horse & Groom has been East Ashling’s public house for more than 200 years. Popular with locals and visitors alike, our warm, homely pub and lodgings have been beautifully brought to life under the new owners, who have extensively refurbished this historic former blacksmith’s shop. Amongst the decorative features you can discover are a striking metre-high bronze horse and jockey sculpture in the entrance hall, an 1840 chestnut serving table from the mountainous area of Andalusia in southern Spain, and an apple green baker’s counter bar that was bought from the Cognac region of France – it even has the original coin slot in the surface. Your cultural journey continues into our dining room, where we serve wholesome dishes prepared with locally sourced produce against the backdrop of early 20th century paintings and contemporary art. A hand-crafted oak floor has been added to provide a suitably authentic feel.

Emsworth, located in the far east of Hampshire, is a picturesque old fishing village nestling on the north end of Chichester harbour, with narrow streets, Georgian houses, walled gardens and a mill pond. The village is popular with sailors, artists and naturalists and its stunning waterside views, makes it an attractive place to visit. The small town retains an old world charm and has several architectural styles. It’s a great place to walk and browse, with interesting antique shops as well as several independent food shops. In the Middle Ages Emsworth was a busy port, importing wine for the noble classes. Later the village used tidal power to grind flour and also became known for its oyster beds, boat building, rope making and brewing. The town’s oyster production is no more but you can still follow the Oyster Trail, a historic walk starting at the Emsworth Museum.

Midhurst has great historical social and political significance – Cowdray played host to both Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII. Guy Fawkes once worked at the house, which later caused the Montague Family to be implicated in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. There’s an amazing array of places to eat in and around Midhurst. No matter whether you’re after low-key and informal or something rather smarter, you’re sure to find somewhere that fits the bill.

Definitely one of the most beautiful villages in southern England. Bosham has been inhabited since Roman times, and is close to the famous palace at Fishbourne. Several important Roman buildings have been found in northern Bosham around Broadbridge including a possible temple, a small theatre and a mosaic. The Bosham Head, part of the largest Roman statue from Britain was found nearby. A legionary helmet was found in Bosham harbour and is now in Lewes museum. The helmet is of late Claudian date, the time of the invasion.

Chichester is so generally lovely, it’s impossible to be rude about it. For a city of its relatively small size, it’s well-rounded, nicely brought up. Every base is covered. It has ancient history – buttercrosses, green men, bell towers, Roman baths, the works – and fine contemporary architecture, including a surprisingly super selection of postwar homes. It has the bestseaside, up the road in the dreamy dunes of West Wittering, and the beautiful hills of the South Downs (including – top trivia – Britain’s only yew forest). It also punches well above its weight culturally, with a Chagall stained-glass window in the cathedral, film festivals and poetry slams, and the Festival Theatre and Pallant art gallery’s Hepworths and Hamiltons. Traffic on the A27 and house prices aside – a mighty big aside – this place has no dark side, unless it’s hidden deep in its repressed past. It is sunshine in bricks and mortar, which, for some, might be the most annoying thing in the universe. - The Guardian
