Food Scene
You always get a friendly welcome at Markels! They make delicious baked goods and there is always a large chalk board with a yummy menu! I love their Haddock chowder and my husband loves the chicken pot pie (HUGE!) & blonde brownies! You can also order a cake if you are celebrating a special occasion - their lemon blueberry cakes is incredible! During lovely weather their deck is a great place to relax with a view of the Bay! It's tucked back off the main road in the village..look out for the open flag on the corner opposite the realtors and go up the alley.

*SO SORRY CURRENTLY CLOSED & LOOKING FOR NEW OWNERS .. 15 SEA ST* Our favorite place in Castine for lunch (other than Markels) and for dinner is the seasonally open Formerly The Wharf. The restaurant is now called 15 Sea St. They have very friendly staff..even when it's busy!..and their food is wonderful! They have a good selection of fish options, crab cakes and of course the obligatory lobster rolls but they have a killer haddock sandwich which we always order with a slice of cheddar...mmmm! Their burgers are also excellent! They occasionally have live music but the absolute best thing about The Wharf is the setting!!! The Wharf has the most amazing waterside deck with incredible views! Sit and sip as sailboats glide by!

Windmill Hill Gardens is a great little place the foodie will enjoy! For such a small place they have a nice selection of wine, baked goods, veggies, and gourmet staples as well as some frozen entree options. Their frozen locally made Chicken pot pie is delicious as are their breads and occasional smoked baby back ribs! They hydroponically grow greens in there! So interesting! They also have a nice small gifts offering.

We LOVE this place!! It’s so fun! Delicious food that can be eaten right there on the Wharf at the picnic tables, al fresco, or if it’s busy there, why not take your goodies to Fort Madison or Wadsworth Cove for a picnic! Their lobster rolls are scrumptious and their fish sandwiches and burgers are great, too! Bon apetit!! 😊

Parks & Nature
Fort Madison is a beautiful historic site where you can gain access to and explore the beautiful rocky beach or just simply have a picnic..or both!! There is a great hill here for sledding in the winter!! The park is just a few minutes stroll from the cottage! We have lovely photos of the view & beach of Fort Madison in our cottage photos!

Wadsworth Cove is a very protected beach just minutes from the cottage by car. Take a picnic and enjoy the splendor of the spectacular sunsets there, take a stroll or swim! The world is your oyster!

I would be remiss for not recommending Acadia..its' proximity to Castine makes for a great day trip! On a clear day you can't beat the view from the top of Cadillac Mountain! It will take your breath away! Acadia is, however, a busy attraction and so we heartily recommend you use the Delorme map book on the shelf under the coffee table and seek out the roads less travelled! We have had wonderful mystery tours around Deer Isle, for example, where you can suddenly stumble upon secluded little coves..just begging for you to enjoy a picnic! Nearby, Stonington is also a great place to soak in a working waterfront!

Essentials
The grocery store in Bucksport is the closest but if you happen to be over near Blue Hill for the day, I also recommend Trade Winds Grocery Store.

There’s nothing quite like being out on the water under sail!! Take advantage of the tours offered around Penobscot Bay aboard the beautiful wooden boat, Guildive! It was a hit with previous guests! Also, Lil Toot from Castine Harbor Tours offers great tours, too! Castinecruises.com (207) 701-1421
