Prepare for amazing views and scenery just 40 minutes drive away. Waitakere Ranges Regional Park has subtropical native rainforest and trails to waterfalls such as Kitekite and Fairy falls. Karekare, to the south, also has a black sand beach. You can stop off at Titirngi Village on the way. It has a nice -free- art gallery and a couple of nice cafe's.
Make sure to visit the black -volcanic- sand Piha Beach known for its strong surf and rugged scenery. Lion Rock is a volcanic monolith with war memorials and Maori carvings.
Bethels beach is worth a visit too with a trail around lake Wainamu.

This downtown art gallery has the most extensive collection of national and international art in New Zealand. Free access. Make sure you visit Albert Park adjacent to the gallery. It has amazing trees. Try one of the asian foodcourts downtown for a cheap and good feed.
