The pioneer of the "Tøyen wave", this former post office ('Postkontoret' literally means the post office) has a good community vibe and a wide selection of beers. Also serves delicious pizza and occationally hosts concerts and other events. (NOTE: The map localises this place in the wrong place. Walk all the way up to the square)

Nowadays you'll find a burger bar or restaurant on almost every street corner in Oslo (at least if feels like it), but Munchies is still my favourite spot for a tasty, quick bite. If you want something more fancy and a little more pricey, check out Kverneriet.

Brutus is natural wine bar and New Nordic style bistro in the neighborhood of Tøyen in Oslo. Right next to it is an equally hipstery bar "Gurken, Gurken, Gurken". The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is experimental. In one sitting, expect to get blown away both by how delicious some of the dishes are, but also the weirdness of others...

In my opinion, this is where you get the best Indian in town. Just beware, Indian food is generally quite pricey in Oslo compared to other countries. If you opt for a curry, naan and rice expect to pay somewhere around 250 - 300NOK.

Lucky for you, one of the hottest restaurants in town is only five floors down from my apartment! Grådi means "Greedy", and the menu consists of Nordic comfort food with a mix of international influences. You're meant to combine several dishes to to make a full meal, but no one will look at you oddly if you're only peckish and opt for just a small bite. The drinks here are delicious, and the atmosphere is amazing! Great for lunch and dinner - and brunch on week ends!

In a huge warehouse right on the edge of the Oslo port, Vippa is the newest and hippest food, culture, and music center in the city. Thursday through Sunday, carefully chosen food trucks offer a selection of diverse dishes, accompanied by a DJ or live music.

A new and really popular addition to the vast Oslo pizza scene, not far from the apartment. Expect to share tables with others and try one of their own craft beers. Right next to Fuglen coffee and drink bar, so if you'd like an evening with good food and great drinks, I'd really recommend combining these two locations for a great night!

Arts & Culture

The Munch Museum celebrates the work of Norway's most famous artist. It's not a very big museum, so perfect if you just want to spend a couple of hours in a gallery. Description from the museum website: Edvard Munch was one of Modernism's most significant artists. He was active throughout more than sixty years; from the time he made his debut in the 1880s, right up to his death in 1944. Munch was part of the Symbolist movement in the 1890s, and a pioneer of expressionist art from the beginning of the 1900s onward. His tenacious experimentation within painting, graphic art, drawing, sculpture, photo and film has given him a unique position in Norwegian as well as international art history.

The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art is both known for its architecture and permanent art collection. It's at the edge of Aker Brygge, a quite touristy and crowded promenade in the fjord, but still worth a visit if you like art! Description from their website: The museum moved to Tjuvholmen in 2012, beautifully located by the Oslo Fjord in a building designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano. The museum presents temporary exhibitions of international art, and houses the Astrup Fearnley Collection, one of Norway’s most important and most extensive private collections of contemporary art, with iconic works by artists such as Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer and Jeff Koons.

The Frogner Park is the largest park in Oslo, and contains the Vigeland installation - a permanent sculpture installation created by Gustav Vigeland between 1924 and 1943. It's basically a whole bunch of nude statues twisted in weird shapes and forms. Kinda cool!

Situated just north of downtown, Grefsenkollen provides great views of Oslo, the fjord, Holmenkollen and the surrounding forests. From the top there are many opportunities to hike further into the beautiful forests of Nordmarka. Catch any eastbound metro from Tøyen to Majorstuen. From there you catch bus 25 and hop off at Grefsenkollveien. The hike from here is about 3.1 km. There's a restaurant and cafe at the top, so you can enjoy dinner here or just grab a Norwegian waffle (vaffel) with brunost like most Norwegians do.

A peak on the northern edge of the city between Holmenkollen and Sognsvann, Vettakollen provides some of the best views of Oslo. Located just minutes from the closest metro stop, this is one of the most accessible hikes from downtown. From Tøyen, take metro no. 1 westbound (Frognerseteren) to the stop Vettakollen. You're now in a residential area, but if you just walk five minutes up (literally) you'll find the path to Vettakollen. Should be signposted! It's pretty steep, so comfortable footwear is a must.

This is my favourite lake in all of Oslo. "Fagervann" literally means "Beautiful pond" and it really lives up to its name. From Tøyen, take bus 20 to Arendalsgata. From there take bus 54 (Kjelsås stasjon) to Godals vei, where you will hop off and get on bus 52 (Maridalen). Ride the bus to the very last stop (Skar). When you've arrived, you need to walk up through the parking lot to your left. You will reach a large path that's going uphill. After about five minutes walk along this path, there'll be signpost for "Fagervann" up to your left. Follow this path for about 45 minutes, and you'll be at one of my favourite spots in Oslo. Make sure to bring something to drink and eat!
