The main tourist attraction in Kawakawa is the colourful public toilet designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. First visiting New Zealand in the 1970s for an exhibition of his work, he decided to make the country his second home and bought property on the Waikare inlet, east of Kawakawa. In 1998 with the help of the community he transformed the town’s public toilets into a work of art.

Sand Surfing on the Giant Te Paki Sand Dunes For those of us who are thrill seekers …. try Sand-surfing, its totally exhilarating, and very fast. You can hire sand boards on site. It is best to do this as these boards are specifically designed for sand, are easily controlled and can slide fast down the slopes.

Jimmy Jack’s Rib Shack has been running a massive BBQ low & slow style menu for over 10 years in New Zealand. Famous for our Ribs which started from on old American recipe, then developed to be our signature Kiwi BBQ sauce, to meet a New Zealand palate. We truly love ribs…and with over 18 tons of ribs we sell each year is testament to that! That’s just some of the story though…if our subtle charcoal smoked beef burgers don’t make Jimmy Jack’s a favourite then our healthy range of food will – with our salads, sizzle plates and vegetarian options. We have the most loved desserts, steaks, slow smoked favourites, fresh breads & seafood, right through to the largest selection of Rib boards. Jimm

Charlotte’s Kitchen established in 2015 is relatively new to the dining scene in Paihia and brings a fresh approach to dining – with a killer view right at the end of the Wharf in Paihia, Bay of Islands! We have a menu that can be shared - from delicious free range pork knuckle to slow cooked lamb shoulder, plus a pizza selection hand crafted with the same love that Charlotte felt for all her conquests! If you’re not a sharer (and let’s face it some of us just aren’t) there is quite the tasty selection of dishes for one. And the inspiration for Charlotte’s Kitchen – Charlotte Badger a woman of interest, passion, strength, daring and just a little bit naughty and some AMAZING artwork by

From top of Mt Camel (aka Mt Houhora, aka Mt Tohoraha). You'll need to catch a boat and then climb it, but it's pretty easy to hitch a lift with a local.
