Food Scene

Kendal has great cafés and restaurants, some we will list here but if you are going into Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside nearly every second building is a cafe or restaurant
Nice coffee, window seat is great for contemplating. Ginger flapjack is delicious - buy one between two to start with. Friday nights have local singers. Nice lunches.

Drinks & Nightlife

As it says, it is a local brewery turned into an arts centre, restaurant and bar. Films most nights as well as touring stage productions and music gigs. Pizza's are pretty good and the restaurant generally is good standard, all pretty informal.

Parks & Nature

Loughrigg is near Ambleside and Rydal. It isn't high but punches above its weight in terms of views so you get a lot for little effort. You can park near Rydal and follow the footpaths along the edge of Rydal water. Approx 45 mins to the top. Stop in Ambleside for lunch on the way back

Stunning views and an easy walk. Easy to overlook as you rush past to get into the Lakes. Across the other side of the valley from our house. I used to run there and back and it is an 8 km round trip, now I drive there and walk up (10 mins walk from the car park). It is easy access and very gentle, from the car park most ages can do it (my mum did it when she was 70 odd. She was fine but cursed me and said I was a no good for taking her walking when she could have been clothes shopping instead ) You can do a variety of circular loops.

Just near where the Windermere ferry docks on the west bank. It is an old Victorian viewing station which has been hidden by trees for years and recently uncovered and restored. Free to visit, views are worth the walk up and there is a nice cafe at the bottom

A trip to the Lake is a must. You can hire rowing boats or go on large cruise ships across the Lakes. Stopping off at Ambleside is great and makes a good day of it.
