Lovely walk along an easy trail to Hellyer Gorge. The road is windy, but if you don't get too car sick, you are rewarded with blissfully peaceful forest, and babbling gorge nearby.

Table Cape Tulip Farm and several other fields nearby will be a riot of colour in late September to mid October as this is where they will be growing tulips. Tulips here are grown for their bulbs, and indeed some of the growers here send bulbs back to Holland, as well as other major flowering events such as Floriade in Canberra.

Such a beautiful little spot. The sand is so white and the sea, so blue, you would think it was up in Queensland somewhere. Okay, the water is a little on the nippy side, but hey- YOLO! Besides which there is a cafe right on the beachfront where you can grab a hot coffee, hot chocolate and warm yourself up. Best of all, you don't need to share this beach with 500 other people. You can enjoy the beach side ambiance in relative solitude.

The Lighthouse at Table Cape is one of the few you can do tours of and climb to the top. It's a beautiful example of an old time lighthouse, standing tall and protecting the coast line along north west tassie for generations.

Stunning gardens in behind Burnie way. All run by volunteers, this place is just beautiful for a relaxing walk and a spot of afternoon tea! I believe it is one of the largest exhibitions of Rhododendrons in the world, and what these volunteers don't know about Rodos, isn't worth knowing!

Iconic, majestic mountain and lake. Loads of opportunities for short or long walks. The walk around Dove Lake is not too strenuous and just beautiful. Finish off with a sit by the fire at the Cradle Mountain Lodge.

I love this place- cut little rustic hut built by the couple who run it. Full of nourishing food, with a local, sustainable produce focus. Its home made cooking that is hearty and delicious. Right on the Bass Highway on the way west towards Boat Harbour way- you can't miss it.

Man, what this place doesn't know about coffee is not worth knowing. Its a passion for these guys! A converted chapel in Burnie (15 minutes drive east from Wynyard), made into a lovely cafe, a place where we now worship their coffee. And their breakfast....and their lunches....

The location of this gem is tucked away behind Cattley street, near the car parking house- so its easy to miss, but do not miss it! The food is superb, and whilst its unassuming in its appearance, the coffee and food never fails to deliver. So grab a lunch here and then take a wander around Burnie's shops for a bit to walk it off. You wont regret it!

This is a lovely restaurant, right on the ocean front with spectacular views out. The food and the service are both excellent with a local flavour focus. My tip would be to go around sunset as the views are lovely, and they have a deck you can sit outside to watch the disappearing day.

Event

The tulip festival occurs in early October, usually the first or second weekend- check their site for exact dates. Its a day of fun in Gutteridge gardens with the tulip tossing, gopher car race, and a mosaic of colours, flavours and folks wandering around. Loads of local produce and fairy floss. Whats not to love!

City advice

Don't miss

The Foreshore Markets- Every 1st and 3rd Sunday

Cool little market along the seafront, with an array of local produce, pop up food vans, local handicrafts, bric-a-brac, and loads of weird and wonderful stuff.
Getting around

Buses operate locally to surrounding areas

If you don't have a car, your only option is a bus. Note- these only operate on Monday- Saturday and not on Sundays nor Public Holidays. Getting here from further afield- say Launceston, you will need to catch the Redline bus to Burnie, and from there, connect with the local bus lines. Timetables for both of these services are readily available online.
Ways to save

Water is safe to drink

Actually, I think our water here is some of the best tasting anywhere! So if you have a bottle you can readily refill from the taps in Wynyard and Burnie. So no need to buy more water!
Customs and culture

People will want to talk to you!

Tasmanian's are a pretty friendly bunch- even more so in regional areas like Wynyard. We will often greet you in the street, and people are very willing to have a chat- so don't be shy about saying hello!
Customs and culture

Tea is not Tea

Locals tend to refer to dinner as tea, so don't get confused if someone asks you out to tea- it wont be a tea cup and brewed leaves affair- more likely to be a steak and three veg affair!
What to pack

Bring a selection of clothes

Pretty much anytime in Tassie the weather can go from hot to cold in a short period of time. In this part of Tassie we don't get too hot nor cold, so best to bring a few layers with you- t-shirt, light jumper and jacket in summer. In winter, bring warmer shirts or tops, warmer jumper and jacket. You should be pretty right for any weather!
