Entertainment & Activities

One of the really awesome places in Colorado to learn how to ski. Their beginner hills are mellow. It can get busy on the weekends, but if you're there midweek, there's a good chance you'll have the hill to yourself. Intermediate and advanced skiers might get bored after a couple of days. Keep your ears out for the word "upslope" in the weather. That's definitely the best time to take a "sick" day.
The kids like this place. 56 hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel. $2 rides.

Hiking, snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. There's a mining ghost town near the trailhead. The road can be challenging in winter. 4WD recommended (and even then sometimes we've been turned back).

Hiking, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing. Parking is challenging! In the winter, follow parking signs and don't block the locals' access to their driveways. Summer plan to get there super-early if you drive or take the shuttle from the Park-N-Ride. Up the road from Hessie is 4th of July trailhead.

Sightseeing

If you like scenic mountain drives, this is the one to do in the area. It starts down in Blackhawk. You can drive this up to Co State Highway 7 and come back, or go on up to Estes Park. This is a very busy road in autumn, when the aspen trees change colors (usually mid-late September).
