Great, extensive hiking trail system, and reasonably technical mountain biking. From the trailhead on Timberline Dr, you first come across the White's Creek Trailhead, and then the Thomas Creek Trailhead. Both trails can take you up into the forested Galena Creek Regional Park, where you can end up in the Mt. Rose Wilderness (no bikes), the Dry Pond Loop, and several other trails. Both trails also extend downhill into the mostly open, suburban areas of far southwest Reno.

Mellow trails for hiking and biking in the lower, southern section of the park. Technical & steep trails in the Virginia foothills in the upper sections. The entire park has fantastic views of the entire Reno area and the Sierra.

Tahoe Meadows is great for year-round outdoor activities. In the winter, you can snowshoe, xc ski, sled, or go snowmobiling. In the warmer months, it's great for hiking and mountain mountain on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Note: Mtn biking is only allowed on even-numbered calendar days, between Tahoe Meadows and Tunnel Creek Rd.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have spectacular terrain. Squaw Valley was the site of the 1960 Olympics, and has a great village at the base of the mountain, in the beautiful valley. Alpine Meadows is the lesser-known ski area, but equally good. Can be very crowded and crazy traffic on weekends, especially at Squaw. www.squawalpine.com

Not as well known, but that's a good thing! GREAT terrain, lots of variety, and generally less crowded than the more famous resorts. Only drawback is that it's further away, just past South Lake Tahoe.
