Sightseeing (Culture & Arts)

Cosmopolitan and artsy, Zadar is the biggest metropolis in northern Dalmatia. Zadar is also an art destination of sorts with two unique installations — the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun — that are not to be missed sound-and-light extravaganzas. Right on the coast, there are also beautiful beaches where the water is clear and warm and perfect for summertime swims. Finally, Zadar is an important transport hub and it is easy to get to nearby islands on day trips. Explore more places to visit in and around this vibrant city.

You've seen dozens of wonderful sunsets in movies but too beautiful to be true. Well in Zadar, beautiful romantic sunsets, are real! Alfred Hitchcock also said that Zadar sunsets were the most beautiful in the world and he was right. The sky takes an orange-pink colour, the sun is huge and it dips gently into the sea and offers an unforgettable and amazing show.

One of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture found in Dalmatia, Zadar's Church of St. Donatus is one of the city's top historic attractions. Dating back to the 9th-century, it was originally named the Church of the Holy Trinity but later re-named after Bishop Donat. While exploring this architectural marvel, note that it is famed for its unique circular form flanked by three circular apses. Built on top of the old Roman forum, the building incorporates many elements of the original structure, including two of the supporting pillars.

Zadar Cathedral, which is also known as the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, blends a number of architectural periods into its fabric. Construction initially began with the Byzantines back in the 9th century, but it was rebuilt again during the 12th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style. Of particular interest is the cathedral's fine façade with its three entrances and numerous blind arches, as well as two beautiful rose windows; the top in Gothic style, while the lower one is Romanesque.

Constructed between the first century BC and the third century AD, Zadar's old Roman Forum should be explored as part of a walking tour of the city (you can't miss it due to its location next to the city's fine old churches). Measuring 90 meters long by 45 meters wide, the scale of this impressive ruin in the Zeleni trg Square still impresses (during Roman times, this area was a central market and public area). Hot Tip: Try to plan your visit for nightfall when the ruins are lit up.

The second oldest museum in Croatia, the Zadar Archaeological Museum (Arheološki muzej Zadar) was founded in 1832 and is dedicated to the city's rich history. Built in the 11th century, the Church of St. Mary has undergone a variety of renovations and alterations over the years. The current church boasts a Renaissance façade and a lovely bell tower, known as Koloman's Tower, a splendid Romanesque structure dating from the 12th century. Next to the church stands the old monastery, which now houses the Museum of Church Art, with its fascinating collection of gold pieces, paintings, and sculptures. Also of interest is an attraction called Gold and Silver of Zadar in the 11th-century Church of Sv. Nediljica. The Kornati islands are an archipelago consisting of 140 islands covering an area of 114 square miles (300 square km). Most of the islands are part of the Kornati National Park – and with its natural beauty, numerous coves and crystal clear blue waters, it’s easy to see why. The islands are best visited on a day excursion from Zadar, Sibenik or Split. It is possible to stay in one of the cottages for a Robinson Crusoe type holiday in which you stay in a house with no electricity or running water – the ultimate in “getting away from it all”!

A trip to the Telaščica Nature Park is an unmissable part of a visit to Dugi Otok – it’s within biking distance from Sali. Telašćica Bay is a 8km deep inlet dotted with bays, islets and cliffs. A spectacular saltwater lake lies next to the bay – the water is warm and you can swim there. Legends abound about hidden treasure and ancient inhabitants with five horns on their heads. More visible treasure is the wildlife that abounds there, from pine to fig to olive to moufflon (a kind of wild sheep). Although the park is not commercialised, there are facilities for tourists providing fresh fish and local wine. Paradise indeed.

Paklenica National Park is located slightly inland from the coast of North Dalmatia, situated about 47km north (northeast) from Zadar. The nearest coastal town to the park is Starigrad Paklenica. The Park is an ideal place to visit for the adventurous – there are several challenging hiking trails, and climbing is also popular here. For those who like things a little more laid-back, there’s more gentle walks available too, with just as much to explore.

Drinks & Nightlife

On warm evenings, everybody is outside. Sitting on benches and promenading the street (the Italian Corzo) are habits that still linger. Zadar's nightlife is neither sceney nor divided into old and young, so in most places you'll find an unpretentious mix of people. While the Old Town is an atmospheric place to spend your evenings, you can also spend time in places like Borik, Diklo and Kolovare, to catch the sea breeze and watch the sun go down. Zadar's sunsets are supposed to be the best in the world. Those of you wanting a little more will nevertheless not be disappointed. Young Croatians are a pretty cosmopolitan lot, and you would be surprised how urban the culture is.
