What to see at island and its surroundings

Čiovo is an island situated in middle Dalmatia, connected with the city Trogir by two drawbridges, and administratively divided between Split, Trogir and Okrug. Total surface of the island is 28,8 km2 and there are several villages: Okrug Donji (Lower,) Okrug Gornji (Upper), Arbanija, Slatine, Žedno and Čiovo. Island is about 2 km away from the mainland on the east (cape Marjan); on the north-west, it is connected with mainland by drawbridges (in Trogir). The island was inhabited already in prehistory and old Romans used to call it Boa (Bua, Bavo). During XV and XVI century the surrounding population came to the island, running away from the Turks. The south side of the island is rather uninhabited. Čiovo's position in the heart of Dalmatia makes it ideal starting point for exploring rich cultural heritage and natural beauties of Dalmatia. We wish you a hearty welcome to this beautiful island!
The Church of Our Lady of Prizidnica, with hermit facilities from 1546, situated among cliffs, lies on the southeast side of the island. The village Slatine is situated on the side of the island looking towards Split. Sanctuary and the church of Our Lady of Prizidnica has been developed by priests from Poljica republic in XVI century. The priest Juraj Stoidražić came into this wilderness and built this temple in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in 1546 . There is an exceptional view from the sight, calm nature and very interesting architecture. It can be also approached from the sea by boat, or from the road from Slatine

For a full 17 centuries continues the saga of Split, since the Roman emperor Diocletian decided to build his palace exactly on the peninsula near the big Roman city Salona, in order to spend his last years in peace. Diocletian palace and the whole old historical city center are part of the UNESCO preserved cultural heritage since 1979 not only because the palace is greatly preserved, but because there is a life going on in the palace in its fullest. In this structure there are visible historical signs of the old Rome, through middle ages till now. Walking through the old city it is possible to travel trough time, there are views of extraordinary examples of ancient architecture like Peristil, medieval Romanic churches, gothic palaces, renaissance portals of noblemen's houses, baroque facades, all the way to modern architecture

We might call it the Magnificent Seven: Bilušića buk, Brljan, Manojlovac, Rošnjak, Miljacka slap, Roški slap and Skradinski buk. These are the tufa cascades of the Krka River – for many, the most beautiful blue line of the Dalmatian karst. Gorgeous cascades and thick, rich sound of life given by water. In many of its parts, the Krka’s flow is calm, and its cascades are announced by “silver necklaces” – increasingly thick rippling of water, the color of which turns silver, resembling countless necklaces scattered on the river. All that silver will eventually splash over the cascades, and beauty will obtain a completely new form.

Lake gardens connected by cascades and hugged by mountain forests. Plitvice Lakes represent a majestic and dynamic face of nature in constant transformation. Science may be clear about the origin of Plitvice Lakes and tufa barriers, but water has always had mythical characteristics for people in karst regions as well. According to legend, following a long drought, the Black Queen took mercy on the karst and let tremendous rain fall on the ground, with the remaining water creating the lakes. Only life can bring together stone, water and forest in this manner. The area is more beautiful than any description, more vivid than any photograph, and more surprising than any video – it is only by visiting the Plitvice Lakes, that one can fully experience this beauty which found its way into the World Heritage List. The Lakes belong to the most impressive, most conserved and most special places in the world. The area of Plitvice Lakes became part of the UNESCO World Heritage List very early on, and it is the oldest National Park in Croatia.

The view over Šibenik reveals the unique harmony of the urban poetics of the town and its natural surroundings. The harbor, which is connected to the open sea by the St. Anthony Strait, has been an initiator of maritime affairs development, trading and the overall economic prosperity of the town for centuries. At the entrance into the Strait is the fortress of St. Nicholas, the most important renaissance fortress on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. Together with the fortresses of St. Michael, St. John and Šubićevac surrounding the town, it is a symbol of the centuries old continuous resistance of Šibenik, as confirmed in the recent Croatian War of Independence.
