Art & culture

Between the Tate Modern and Tate Britain we have two of London’s most renowned art spaces. The Tate Britain is a slice of the past with the Modern located in London’s artist heartland, situated along the South Bank of the Thames. Visiting the area you’ll be spoilt for choice, from the National Theatre, Hayward Gallery, British Film Institution and Royal Festival Hall, not to mention one of the cities oldest skate zones. Unlike in many cities the majority of London’s galleries and museums are free to entry. Though at the Tate there will be the blockbuster exhibition you’ll need to pay to get in and definitely book online before going.

This is not just a market but now an institution. The market holds something for everyone, from the odds and ends being sold by hawkers, to locals selling cheap knock offs to upmarket clobber. Personally I think you should go for the love of street art.

Dark Sugar offer a wonderful selection of rich dark chocolate, mixed with everything from passion fruit to your favourite liquor. My personal favourite is their signature hot drinks that come layered with trimmings of white, milk and dark chocolate. Truly indulgent. Dark sugar also sell a great selection of ice creams which are also definitely worth a buy.

This definitely reminds me of places in Thailand that I’ve eaten in yet there’s still something peculiar about it which I’ve yet to put my finger on. If you have any answers please do share. The vibes is more striking when the weather really picks up so that evening meal can almost, almost feel like you’re in Bangkok.

It’s really a great place to catch live jazz, mostly at the weekend, whilst sipping on a good cocktail and maybe even get in a dance. The venue is also a decent restaurant. Check their website for who’s performing and often they’s no cover charge. But it’s wise to book in advance for table.

Sightseeing

Columbia Road market comes alive on a Sunday, principally a flower market serving east London’s aspiring horticulturalists. A great place to take photographs. Alongside the market are many little boutique shops selling everything from screen prints from street and urban artists to ceramics. There are also few decent places to grab breakfast and lunch.

Excellent open space that borders lots of cool places which are all worth exploring. This park comes to life in the summer from guys leaving work early to sunbathe to I’m guessing foreign students throwing frisbees to hip families dining out on picnic blankets. There’s a cool kids play area which features a water park plus a bonafide skate park for the more adventurous. In the summer, part of this park is taken over, host large festivals with headliners such as The Strokes to the Chemical Brothers to Bon Iver. My current favourites Run the Jewels and The Idles.
