Food scene

There is a multitude of cafes, restaurants of every type of cuisine and bars within easy walking distance of the apartment. Here are just a few...
Phamish is one of the restaurants in the courtyard - we eat there at least once every time we stay.

Lucio's is another courtyard restaurant and it is a prize winner - Lucio Pizzeria was crowned 2018 #Australia Pizza Champion at the Campionato Mondiale della Pizza held in Parma, Italy. I used to order a takeaway pizza on my way home from work, pop upstairs, get changed, head back down and it was ready to collect.

The Rusty Rabbit is one block up the Burton Street hill on the corner of Forbes Street. It is popular with the locals and can get busy on weekends but there is nothing better than sitting outside with a coffee and watching all the interesting people and things that give Darlo texture.

This is the original store that opened in 2002 and still carries a dizzying array of Gelato flavours - Marian always has pistachio and I love the rum and raisin. On warm summer nights prepare to line up!

Great place to pop in for a coffee on the way back to the apartment after a walk down to the harbour and past the Opera House. Also good breakfast and lunch weekday venue.

This is a bit of an institution in Stanley Street, which is only five minutes walk from the apartment. We pop in for a coffee and croissant and sit amongst the old locals gesticulating wildly about some European football game or political intrigue.

Bars

Commemorating one of Darlinghurst's more shady charachters from the inter-war years Tilly ran a string of brothels centred around Darlinghurst and the Cross, and in particular, Palmer Street. Luckily those days are long gone but the vibe lives on!

The party never stops at Shady Pines. Open the unmarked door in Foley Street, a graffiti-covered lane just around the corner from the apartment. Open the second door (soundproofing proved necessary once it became clear just how popular this bar was going to remain) and descend into a sunken saloon where at any moment you could find yourself in the middle of a wobbly sing-a-long to American Pie cranked right up – and that’s on a Wednesday.
