Food Scene

The "hip" area of Bridgeport with lots of restaurants, music venues, and excellent personal services. Within walking distance is St. Mary's by the Sea -- a wonderful promenade on the Long Island Sound with fabulous views, sunsets, and sunrises. Light house is not too far away but you can't walk there. Restaurants and bars within walking distance (in order of proximity) The Shebeen (at the corner of King and Fairfield Avenue). Irish dive bar with mediocre food but reasonably priced drinks and lots of camaraderie. Of course, if you crave deep fried bar food you might consider this heaven! Mi Rancho (2754 Fairfield Ave) is really a grocery store but offers some of the most authentic Mexican tacos this side of the border. Great prices, too. Recommended are the chorizo, chicken, or beef tacos. Nopales for the vegetarians. There are a couple of tiny tables in the back but…get it to go and walk to St. Mary’s by the Sea for a fabulous picnic. Matty’s Corner (2754 Fairfield Ave). NO. Just NO. Clientele lines up starting at 8:30 a.m. to get in when they open at 9:00 a.m. Why? Earliest place to get a drink. You get the picture. Bereket Turkish Restaurant (2871 Fairfield Avenue) offers tasty Turkish kebabs, stuffed grape leaves, babaghanoush, and the like. Takeout or delivery only right now. Average prices. Source Coffeehouse (2889 Fairfield Avenue) has high-end, but delicious, coffees, teas, and small breakfast items. With a menu that all Millennials will love (and this mid-aged woman does also) you’ll find oat or almond milk for your coffees or matcha lattes, plus tofu breakfast sandwiches and more. Pricey but delicious. Fire Engine Pizza Company (2914 Fairfield Avenue) has the best mashed potato pizza on the planet. They also offer Italian appetizers, sandwiches, pastas, and entrees. A bit pricey, and a bit salty for my taste, but super popular. Black Rock Social (2895 Fairfield Avenue) delicious 100% gluten free menu. You won't miss the gluten because everything is so good. Road Runner Cantina (2931 Fairfield Avenue) has a menu that’s a bit fussy for my taste but my taste buds love the food. Skip using your Algebra III skills to conjure up your order and, if I may suggest, get the roasted street corn, the ceviche, and a damn good quesadilla. Restaurants and bars a little bit farther when you want to get in your steps and have a righting chance of walking off some of what you ate! Beverly Pizza (2969 Fairfield Avenue). IF you love pizza so cheesy that the oil drips down your chin this is the place for you! Not expensive. No ambiance. And the owner likes to leer. Timothy’s Ice Cream (2974 Fairfield Avenue). SO GOOD but you’ll never know if they are open unless you call (203/366-7496). Old timey, delicious, quirky, and well worth the walk if they are open! Hub & Spoke (3001 Fairfield Avenue). Billed as “American Tapas”. Wonderful craft cocktails and bartenders. Tapas are fairly mediocre, but the shrimp and grits are great, unless you get some of the “cutting board” items like flat iron steak or ribs. Brunch is overpriced and underwhelming. BRYAC (3074 Fairfield Avenue). BRUNCH! Lobster eggs benedict and the strawberry Nutella French toast are the bomb. They also have a great raw bar, amazing spicy coconut milk mussels, and decent salads and burgers (for the land lubbers). Taco Loco (3170 Fairfield Avenue) is THE place to go for a frozen margarita, or two. Food itself is uninspired (you’re better off at Road Runner or Mi Rancho). This is the farthest that I personally would walk, LOL!
