This modest tomb complex is the burial site of the seven Machabee brothers, who were martyred around 174 BC. Their mother was Agia Solomoni, a Jewish woman who became a saint after the death of her sons. It is thought that the space was a synagogue in Roman times. The entrance to the catacomb is marked by a collection of votive rags tied to a large tree outside the tomb. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/cyprus/pafos/attractions/agia-solomoni-the-christian-catacomb/a/poi-sig/1434902/358813

The inclusion of the Kato Pafos archaeological site in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980 was the catalyst for a far-reaching plan, the aim of which was to protect and maintain the town’s archaeological remains, as well as to promote them and provide comprehensive information for visitors. Kato Pafos Archaeological Park includes sites and monuments from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, while most date from the Roman period. The marvellous mosaic floors of four Roman villas form the impressive epicentre of the Park, but the complex also includes other important monuments, such as the Asklipieion, the Odeon, the Agora, the “Saranta Kolones” (Forty Columns) fortress, the basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa (Our Lady of the Harbour) and the “Tombs of the Kings”. https://www.visitpafos.org.cy/a-proud-heritage/archaeological-sites/

Imagine yourself surrounded by ancient tombs in a desertlike landscape where the only sounds are waves crashing on rocks. The Tombs of the Kings, a Unesco World Heritage Site, contains a set of well-preserved underground tombs and chambers used by residents of Nea Pafos during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD. Despite the name, the tombs were not actually used by royalty; they earned the title from their grand appearance. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/cyprus/pafos/attractions/tombs-of-the-kings/a/poi-sig/445493/358813

This exceptionally large villa was the residence of the Roman proconsul or governor, and was divided between rooms for official functions and those for private use. Its name derives from the beautiful mosaic of Theseus and the Minotaur found in the southeast quarter. The villa covered several insulae of the Hellenistic street plan. It was built in the 2nd half of the 2nd c. AD over ruins of earlier houses and was occupied until the 7th c. AD. So far only the southern half of the villa has been fully excavated. Source: Wikipedia

Cyprus Nature

Definitely the most known bridge of the island, you’ll find it in Paphos’ forest and it can easily be accessed from Limassol and Troodos as well, with all routes offering beautiful views of cypress and pine trees. Its popularity is due to the fact that that it’s the largest stone bridge ever build in Cyprus and goes over river Diarizos. Found in an area of rich green vegetation, the forest area engulfing it is beautiful and has various nature spots to be explored. Many hikers, tourists and even newly-weds make a stop to be photographed with the charming Tzelefos bridge. Only 6km from Ayios Nikolaos villages, enrich your journey by visiting some other nearby picturesque villages such as Omodos, Arsos and Vasa. https://mycyprustravel.com/sightseeing/venetian-bridges/

If there’s one dam that will be forever etched in your memory in Cyprus, it has to be the one of Arminou. And it’s not because the dam (fed by the Diarizos River) is any more spectacular or awe inspiring than many others dotted around the country, but, that the journey to get there, and the scenery which surrounds it, is absolutely out of this world. https://mycyprusinsider.com/the-great-outdoors/must-visit-arminou-dam/

The Akamas National Park lies on the west coast of Cyprus, a truly pictorial part of the island. It has an area coverage of 230 square kilometres containing valleys, gorges and wide sandy bays. The wildlife diversity is crucial for the ecology in the Mediterranean. In this spectacular environment there are 168 varieties of birds, 20 different reptiles, 16 species of butterfly and 12 different mammals not to mention its very rich variety of fauna. The important significance of the Akamas Peninsula has been duly noted; The European Council has included it in its Mediterranean Protection Programme. The Cyprus Government has yet to fully declare it as a National Park for tourist and local landowners reasons, although friends of the Earth and Green Peace are lobbying hard for it. https://www.chooseyourcyprus.com/discover-cyprus/akamas-peninsula.html

Hiking/Walking Routes Paphos

A wonderful coastal boardwalk path runs along the Mediterranean on the western side of Cyprus, in Paphos. There are great views of the water, and several scenic and important sites nearby. The south end of the path starts at the Medieval Castle of Paphos, and goes for 3.6 km north to the Venus Hotel, for an out and back of 7.2 km (4.5 miles). Sites along the way include House of Theseus, the Paphos Mosaics, the House of Dionysos (restored Roman Villa), Odeon architectural ruins, and the Tomb of the Kings. Much of the route follows Lighthouse Beach (Faros Beach). Surface type varies. Some sections right along the water, others a bit above it. Great sunsets! There is also a decent path/sidewalk heading south, from the Paphos Harbor as far as the Luna Park, for about 4 km. Some sections are bona fide boardwalk, while others are more beachside sidewalk. Most of this is right along the beach, where you can vary your run by doing some of the section on sand! The beach itself is fairly wide and runnable, especially near the water. https://greatruns.com/paphos-coastal-path/
