Passeio turístico

Benagil Beach, once dominated by the seafarers, is now a summer destination due to its crystal and calm waters. The wooden boats continue to colour the water landscape and to welcome the visitors. This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful beaches amongst the 40 existing in the council. Like Algar da Praia de Benagil, the algar at Benagil Beach is a natural ex-libris and one of the most famous of Lagoa. Between the Farol de Alfanzina (Lighthouse of Alfanzina) and Nova Beach, there are dozens of tour-boats to these amazing water caves. It is part of the Seven Hanging Valleys walk, which is a walking trail extending for 5.7 Km along the cliff that joins Vale de Centeanes Beach to the Marinha Beach, being Benagil the lowest point of the trail, reaching 7.50 m above the sea level. Nearby there are some prehistorical archaeological traces on Vale d’El Rei, a little to the Norwest of the beach.

There is a reason why Marinha Beach has been awarded with a Golden Flag and classified as one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. Here, nature has left its beautiful traces in these cliffs and awarded this beach an amazing greenish-blue sea. But don’t think this beach only has colourful and shaped cliffs to offer. The sound of the birds searching for fish will take you to the underwater realm. You only need a diving mask and some fins to get into the wonders this beach has to offer you. This patrimony, which belongs to Lagoa, but mostly to the world, has had the attention of some entities, like the University of the Algarve or the CCR Algarve, as well as its own Municipality, to set underwater trails that lead you to an adventure full of emotions. You can also go to the big algar, where the information board will explain you how these caves are formed in lime coastal areas.

A few steps away you can find the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação (Fortress of Our Lady of the Incarnation) protected the fishing port and was built between 1670 and 1675 by Nuno de Mendonça, captain general of the Kingdom of the Algarve. From it there’s only a wall and an access portico. Its plant was polygonal and the batteries had two or three cannons. The walled space contained the powder barn, the garrison chambers, later used by the Fiscal Guard, a cistern and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Incarnation, which is probably much older than the fort but it was much altered in the renovations in 1796 and 1840. In the 18th century the chapel was domed and had an eight-side pyramidal roof. The sea erosion and the earthquake in 1755 much contributed to these changes in its aspect. In 1861, the fort is deactivated and in 1937 part of the wall is broken down to give place to the road of Algar Seco. The wooden path, with resting areas, is an alternative of access to this place. Don’t be afraid to walk it.

Ferragudo is one of the most beautiful silhouettes of seaside town that can be found in the entire Algarve. The village of Ferragudo was born around the 19th century. XIV. Fishermen who were looking for support for their families at sea, settled in these places, erecting crude and humble huts. However, there are traces that certify us human presence in Ferragudo in the period of Prehistory. The mouth of Arade was also the target of greed for the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. The Romans settled camp, devoting themselves to fishing and the salting industry. To prove this stay are the archaeological finds found near the Fort of St. John of Arade. According to historical sources, the place name Ferragudo comes from the existence of an iron mill, located in Praia da Angrinha, whose purpose was to raise the fish and the goods of the boats that used to dock there.
