Food

Get the free ferry from Centraal station to NDSM - an industrial neighbourhood with many hidden treasures. Pllek serves mainly vegetarian (but do have some meat options), organic and locally sourced food. It is a cool venue made out of ship containers, with a 'beach' (and deck chairs) overlooking the IJ river, with some spectacular views. Look online for live music nights or if there are any other events on.

De Foodhallen is a must go for any food lover. A hall with many high quality food stands in an old tram station. Make sure you go with an empty stomach and do not leave until you have tried at least eight different stands! Our favourites are, of course, the traditional Dutch bitterballen; the dim sum; The Butcher burgers (but please check my recommendation for The Butcher on Albert Cuypstraat); and the oyster bar! There is live music on some days, so please check the website for what's on.

Another treasure in Amsterdam-Noord... If you love cheese and wine, then this is the place to be. Either book a cheese and wine tasting or just drop by and order straight from the menu.

A restaurant with a really cool fish market concept. You start by choosing your fish at 'the market stall', then make your way to the wine market and finally, take a seat at a table and wait for your fresh fish to be beautifully served. To avoid unnecessary food waste, the fishmongers continuously decrease the price of the fish to sell out all the fish that is available.

This one's a special one. A five hour experience which includes a one hour boat ride from Amsterdam-Oost to an island which has nothing but the restaurant on it; a super creative and delicious six course seasonal meal (with wine or alcohol free pairings); and a boat back. Summer version is in a greenhouse, winter version is in a cellar. Would highly recommend going if you have something to celebrate, worth every penny. Needs to be booked about three months in advance, but give them a call and see if they have any cancellations - you might get lucky!

An absolute hidden gem for the best Indonesian food EVER. Not likely to get a table, very likely to be a queue outside, but definitely worth the wait. Get it to go and enjoy it by the water either right outside (and go for a swim after) or on the grass at Azartplein, with beautiful sunset views. Check opening times before you go.

Right, words cannot describe this place. Kombucha on tap / tastings. The owner is an absolute kombucha scientist and magician - so passionate and knowledgable, it's amazing. The free ferry from Azartplein will take you directly to this cute cinema with a small restaurant, serving a seasonal menu and great organic wines, which you can enjoy on the terrace on the bank of the IJ river. TIP: Although it is possible to eat whilst watching a film, I would highly recommend eating before or after the film, in the restaurant. The novelty quickly wore off, when we realised the importance of tables and light when eating and how loudly we chew.

Probably the most well known market in Amsterdam, with stands selling everything from shoes and luggage to fresh vegetables and fish. You’ll also find typical Dutch treats like raw herring or warm, freshly made stroopwafels.
