Since 1847 , in fact , at the behest of Pope Pius IX , a cannon fires blanks at noon . The pope wanted to impose a standard to the bells of the Church of Rome so that all sounded in unison .
From 24 January 1904 the cannon is placed on top of the Janiculum hill just below the statue of Garibaldi and his shot , in quieter days , it is audible to the Esquiline .
