位于极乐寺附近海拔821公尺的升旗山是槟城著名的旅游胜地，山间的气候凉爽宜人。而游客上升旗山方法有二，可选择乘坐有缆列车或徒步登山。这里的缆车与平时挂在空中的缆车不同，它是贴在铁路上，被缆线拉上去的。2011年5月正式投入服务的新缆车速度非常快，升旗山新缆车的最高秒速可达到10公尺，一趟车程仅需5分钟。但缆车的正常行驶速度是每秒6公尺，全程耗时7分钟。若是行程时间不多或对徒步登山没很大的兴趣，建议乘坐缆车，除可以看看绿林植物外，快速度的感觉还蛮刺激的。在升旗山上，空气清新，气温凉爽，视野辽阔，你可以眺望到槟城市区的风景、漂亮的大海，若天气不错无雾，你还可以眺望到那遥远的两座槟城大桥。本人觉得，上山的最佳时间是一大清早和旁晚过后。清早可避开人潮，气温较凉爽，可呼吸大自然的新鲜空气，幸运的话还可以看到日出；晚上可以从凉爽的山上静静欣赏槟城漂亮的夜景。
