Buses and trains are the cheapest way. Then tuk tuk

Buses and trains are cheap but crowded. Specially in peak time (morning 6am-9am evening 4pm-7pm)
Ways to save

Use uber or meter taxi

When it's not peak time, uber is cheaper. If you don't have time for book an uber, then always use metered taxi(tuk tuk). Metered taxi are only available in colombo most of the time.
What to pack

Cottons and light natural fabrics to wear

The climate is tropical, and the weather is hot and humid throughout the year. So cotton shirts and trousers are more comfortable. Pack sunglasses and sun-cream too.

Dress modestly at religious sites. Women should wear long skirts, dresses or loose trousers and modest blouses. Men should wear long trousers. Wear light colors

Hire a van for long trips around the country

There are lot of a/c vans for hire. Normally it's arround Rs.50 per 1 km.
