The ferry is fun and it's a different world over there- no crowds, traffic or frustration. very peaceful. If you have 4 wheel drive you can get a beach pass and drive out to the beach.
It's gorgeous and has both a southside beach w/surf as well as a barrier beach protected pond for little ones to safely enjoy. It is not mobbed with people, in fact, go early on nice beach days or the lot will fill before noon. There is a small parking fee but the beach and your sanity is worth it.
