Great coffee, handy for picking something up whilst waiting for a bus into town - they stop right outside.

Parks & Nature

This beautiful garden is open to the public for free (donations welcome), right next to Duddingston Loch. There are lovely views over the loch and towards Arthur's Seat. We love this place as it's a tucked away quieter spot in the middle of the city. There's always something to see in the garden, whatever time of year.

The website has all relevant information, but we never tire of visiting this place. It's huge, something to see in all seasons, good coffee and food available. Best of all, even though it's a major destination for residents and visitors it still feels like a real oasis of calm and tranquility in the heart of Edinburgh.

We love the medium length walk beside the river - it's quiet and peaceful, and we've spotted deer in the woods. The cafe is usually pretty busy, but worth a visit. If you have children the Fort Douglas play area is great, although we think it's a little pricey - make sure you leave plenty of time to enjoy it.

Arts & Culture

The Charles Jencks landscaping makes an immediate and striking impression when you arrive here. The art gallery itself is a beautiful building, the cafe is excellent (I particularly recommend the salads) and the exhibits are thought-provoking. We like walking down the steps at the back of the gallery to access the Water of Leith - a lovely stretch of which meanders away in both directions. Parking is currently £2 for the whole day. It's within walking distance of the city centre and Edinburgh Coach Lines bus 13 stops outside (as at 29/8/18). The Gallery Bus can shuttle you to and from the National Gallery on Princes Street.

Essentials

Large supermarket, you should be able to get everything you need here, including petrol. There's a cafe with toilets too. Around 3 minutes from the flat, you don't even need to cross a road - there's a wee path through Baronscourt Park.

Entertainment & Activities

There's a lot for the children to see here - you can build a whole day out around this place. It's not cheap but if you stay for the day most things are included in the entrance fee. There are often special events on so it's worth looking at the website. Our children love seeing all the animals.
