An absolute favourite with our visitors.

A lovely, picturesque and peaceful village, perfect to wander around then stop for lunch or coffee to enjoy the view of the river. The chateau, once in the hands of Richard the Lion Heart, (not open to members of the public), overlooks the slow running, winding river and the large grassed public area, perfect for picnicking and padding. There is a very popular Marche de Pays held in this space very Monday evening during July and August, where you can buy locally produced food and drink.. Get there early (6pm?) to get a place on the tables, or take a rug to sit on the river bank while listening to, and watching, the live music and dancing. A magical evening experience.

Stunningly beautiful red-stoned village, with shops, selling original items, good restaurants, and a peaceful and friendly vibe, originating as a 8th century priory which welcomed pilgrims on their way to Rocamadour and the Compostele. Park just outside the village in a designated carpark and wander around the passages and streets at your leisure.

A historical, well preserved and beautiful village on top of a high hill, great to explore the little streets. Superb views over the surrounding countryside. You can walk between At Robert and Ayen, (about 3km) which is on a nearby hill, stop for lunch then return. A beautiful way to spend the day. There is a popular Marche de Pays on some Friday evenings during July and August, set in the square beside the abbey, where you can buy locally produced food and drink. Get there early( 6pm?) to get a place on the tables. Check dates with the tourist office in Juillac.

Rocamadour is built on the side of a gorge in the Dordogne valley. It's a fascinating complex of ancient monastic buildings with the equally picturesque town below, built into the rocks of the gorge It has been a pilgrimage site for centuries and is a favourite for tourists. The best view of Rocamadour is from across the gorge, then drive to the car park above the main site. There is an interesting shady winding path, from the car park to the monastic buildings. There is also a lift which goes from the car park to the bottom of the town, with one stop (base of path). We recommend taking the path down and, if weary, the lift up. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, most with great views over the gorge.

Brive has a famous Saturday market, which offers local delicacies to livestock, in addition to the usual lively market scene. The city has an historical centre with fascinating shops and high end fashion. It's a favourite place to wander around, have a meal, shop or just people-watch.

Informative, interesting, educational and impressive.

The original village of Oradour-sur-Glane was destroyed on 10th June 1944 when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a company of the Nazi Waffen- SS. It has been maintained as a permanent memorial, and has an excellent and informative museum beside the site, with artifacts being exhibited in an underground space in the cemetery near to where the remains of unknown victims are buried in a mass grave. Why visit this place on holiday? It's so meaningful and unforgettable, a very worthwhile visit. It's only about an hour by car from Juillac.

The complex of caves, known as the Lascaux caves, with over 600 paintings over 17000 years old was discovered in 1940. To protect the paintings from heat, humidity and contamination produced by over 1200 visitors a day, an accurate reproduction of the painted areas of the cave has been built into the side of the mountain, forming part of an award-winning museum just outside Montignac, in the Dordogne. Nearby Parc de Thot is a great place to picnic and see live animals representing ice-age fauna.

Leisure activity

A beautiful place for swimming and paddling, especially on hot days. The playground is well shaded, as are the bank and shallow areas for paddling. Picnic benches or grassed areas alongside the river. The village has an interesting history of resistance during WWII, with a memorial to those taken hostage by the Nazis. The little church, with windows painted by Chagall, is worth a visit. There is a very popular Marche de Pays held in this space very Tuesday evening during July and August, where you can buy locally produced food and drink.. The real reason for recommending Vigeois is the Lac de Poncheral, which is about 2 miles outside the village. It's a great place to spend the day doing nothing more than swimming in the lake, picnicking, reading, sleeping, making sandcastles, taking a walk around the lake (40 minutes?) etc. There is a sandy beach, plenty of grassed and shady areas, two boarded walkway that extend into the lake, each with a diving board, toilets, and all free, including parking. There is a kiosk for food and drinks. Lifesavers are in attendance during July and August. Vigeois itself is a very pretty village with an old bridge over the river which runs through the gorge. it's another good spot for relaxing beside water. We haven't swam there, but others do. No facilities near the bridge.
