This place is located a five minute walk from my place. I love the informal atmosphere, but there's no wifi so you need to talk to your table like it's 1995. Hearty breakfasts, delicious brunch and fresh cooked muffins and great coffee combine to make this place a favourite with locals.

Built in the late 1800s, the Post Office, located right next to the famous Moss Vale train station, linking Sydney to the Southern Highlands; it's a grand heritage listed building. In March 2017 restorations began to bring the old PO back to life. Today the Post Office has transformed into a great cafe. It is situated right in the midst of Moss Vale, which is no longer a little sleepy, country town but, a vibrant place to be with an array of boutiques, restaurants, and shops. Great French-inspired specials and delicious coffee.

Bernie's is a fantastic replica of an Art Deco American diner. It feels like you have stepped back into the 1950s. Great cheese / chilli burgers, hot dogs, shakes and fries. Delicious splits and other down-home American favourites like peacan pie. Place your order, grab a slushie or soda, chill out in a big red booth and enjoy a slice of 1950s Americana right here in Moss Vale, NSW!

I love Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant! It's a traditional Chinese-Australian restaurant with all your favourites. The servings are huge, so be warned you might not get through what you've ordered. Serene, calming decor, and accessible bathroom. The service is always warm and hospitable.

Sightseeing

The magnificent Fitzroy Falls are located 18 kms from Moss Vale. Water plunges over 80m to the valley below. The Falls are an ideal place to explore the escarpment of the Southern Highlands between Robertson and Nowra. There is visitor centre where you can find out about local history, wildlife and birdwatching opportunities in this unique place. There are wheelchair-accessible facilities and it's a short boardwalk to the scenic views of the waterfalls; an ideal location for families, groups and the elderly. Absolutely stunning!

Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve, is just a 5 minute drive from my place. It's a great place for walking, picnicking or echidna-watching. I love the tranquility and peace. Over 90 species of birds, a third of which are waterbirds, have made Cecil Hoskins nature reserve their home. The land was originally part of 1,000 acres granted in 1819 to Charles Throsby in recognition of his exploration of a route from the Southern Highlands to Bathurst. Colonial era buildings can still be seen there today.

Moss Vale Showground is just across the road. There’s always something on - from markets every 4th Saturday, to Pony Club on Sundays, horse shows or Moss Vale held in March every year. Alpacas took up residence in January 2020 when the Showground was used as an evacuation centre during the fires.

For all the cricket tragics from Australia and around the world this is a must see during any visit to the Southern Highlands. Just 12 minutes / 9 kms from my place, this Museum features touch screen interactives, fascinating memorabilia and absorbing stories from cricketing greats – to keep you entertained for hours. The Museum is set in the beautiful surrounds of Bradman Oval, and includes the Bradman Café and gift store.

A trip down to the glow worm glen at Bundanoon (about a 25 min / 20 k drive from my place) is one of the best things to do, especially with kids. The best time to visit is between December and January. It's best to start your walk down to the Glen at sunset so it's dark by the time you get there. The Glen is located on William Street, on the right on the Moss Vale side of town. You can park at the top end of William Street. A steep track leads down to the Glen. The return trip is about an hour (but make sure you factor in time to see the 'worms' (which are actually larvae offspring of the fungus gnat). The glow is caused by a chemical reaction between certain body fluids and oxygen. (And remember if you haven't got a torch with your, use the flashlight function on your iPhone.)

City advice

What to pack

Weather - always bring a light jumper

No matter when you are visiting the Southern Highlands and Moss Vale, I recommend you pack a light (or heavy) jumper. While the days can be warm or even hot in summer, the nights are always much cooler given the altitude. One day can be 35 and the next in the mid teens (Celcius).
