Foster Memorial Beach is a little rockier than ocean beaches, with shells and small rocks mixed in with the sand. Nevertheless, kids can go on treasure hunts for the prettiest shell while parents relax on a blanket. Bathrooms and showers are available, but a concession stand is not. An ice cream truck generally visits in the afternoon. Parking is $20 per day during the high season. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Life guards are on duty in a limited area, 9-5 during the summer season.

The Milk Pail Fresh Market began more than 30 years ago. John learned about farming growing up on his father’s Mecox potato farm while Evelyn got her first taste for apple growing from her parents’ apple orchard in Vermont. In 1969 they began a tiny retail store to market their vegetables and sell the milk produced by their cows. They named the store The Milk Pail, since milk was their main product at the time. The following spring they planted their apple orchard and have been perfecting and adding award-winning varieties ever since.

The name Sagaponack comes from the Shinnecock Indian Nation word for "land of the big ground nuts". Potatoes are the predominant crop grown by farmers who first settled the area. Its first settler was Josiah Stanborough in 1656. The village includes one of the last remaining active one-room school houses in New York State. The building, known locally as the "Little Red School House," educates children in grades Kindergarten through third grade.

In 1644, England gave Edward Howell 40 acres (16 ha) of land near the new settlement of Southampton to build a mill for settlers to grind their grain into meal. It became a landmark, and people began referring to other settlements that popped up as "east or west of the watermill." By the 1800s, the area was known as Water Mills and was later changed to Water Mill. Howell's Water Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Today, the hamlet boasts its status as the only settlement on the South Fork of Long Island with both a functioning watermill and windmill.
