Cracking Little pub in the heart of the village. Serving crisp pints and local wines at good prices. In summer you can take advantage of the beer garden or sit out in the square. Note Main road separates Pub from village square-bear garden better for kids.

Run by Arnie who also happens to brew superb beer this little bar is about 10/15 mins in the car. The main bar has no garden but everyone sits on the other side of the road where picnic benches are set out on grass in front of the church. Note - The road is not a fast road but you need to be careful if visiting with children.

Great Lake for swimming with the kids and life guards in summer to ensure everyone is safe. La Jemaye also has two kids parks, picnic benches under the pines and a forest walk and kayaking to offer. With a sprinkling of food and drink shacks and clean public toilets you can literally spend all day there swimming or reading in he shade of the trees.

Tucked away this old mill has been renovated to working order and a small bar restaurant has popped up in the grounds. Next to the Mill and river is a small park, tiny secluded beach accessed via a low low rope bridge and maze with observation tower. Some good french cooking here with plenty of seating under the trees in summer. Up by the car park is a treetop adventure park with long zip line which the kids will love and the adults will most likely make up excuses to stay earthbound

A cracking little pizza restaurant set under huge shady plane trees right on the river beach. Although the snack food here is not the best at all the pizza restaurant is excellent. Simple pizzas with a nice light base and range of toppings plus excellent pizzas for the kids. Over the main road from the bar you can pay to use the campsites water slide. Alternatively walk over the footbridge to the other side of the river for a bit or peace away from the crowds.

Sightseeing

In the car its about 30 mins drive. This will involve a fair amount of walking up to an hour to he first lake and the onto the second lake from there. The views are simply amazing and the old quarries have the most amazing blue water. Please note its cool walking in the forest but please don't expect to be able to swim to cool off its forbidden here. Excellent for those who enjoy a trek.

Its a dangerous place to visit! Fine wines and super cool restaurants dot the ancient cobbled streets of Saint-Emilion. Adults can justify this visit to their kids in many ways but the tourist information bureau at the top square can help you with things to show the kids too. Below the streets is the most amazing monolithic church which many people dont even realise is there. Guided tours are a great way to see the church and village or a gentle amble and a couple of hours will serve you well. At an hour away we recommend its best for a lazy day out or tied into a visit to Bordeaux.

Bordeaux has undergone a massive change. The old dirt has been sandblasted back from all the stone buildings to leave a sparkling gem on the west coast of France. Rich in culture and history Bordeaux is a very easy city to enjoy by tram or on foot. Dive into the heart of the city and use one of the huge underground car parks or park and ride your way in. Its very easy to spend a full day there and with a bit of planning you can entertain the kids easily. The Lego shop, Miroir d'Eau fountain on the riverbank and Bradleys Bookshop are big treats for the little people. Shops, restaurants and bars and too many to list.

A Gallo-Roman Museum VESUNNA is good for adults and slightly older children. The site is wrapped in an amazing modern building and the architects have cleverly created walkways above the ruins that help you get closer to the site. Interactive displays helps to convey the architecture and a wealth of handmade artefacts help to make the past more tangible.

On the first Sunday of every month Verteillac village bursts into life for the monthly antiques market or Brocante as the locals call it. Although this is the main focus of the day the french take it as an opportunity to catch up and have a chat in the small cafes around the village. Good fun if you like a bargain hunt.

Aubeterre's monolithic church was cut into the rock over many many years. Like something out of an Indians Jones movie the church attracts 80,000 visitors a year. Worth a visit and its nice and cool inside. If you get too hot and the walk into town why not stop off an treat the kids to the artisan ice cream at the shop next door. The balcony at the back has great views and plenty of shade.

Cognac is well worth a visit not just for a tour of the distilleries but also because it is steeped in history. Its winding streets and amazing architecture make it a good day out. Twin that with a degustation of the cognac and possibly a bottle or two to take home whats not to like?

56 mins in the car but good fun. Built on the thermal site in Jonzac the swimming pool is big and has water slides, wave machines and a snack bar in the main pool, there is also swim out access to an outside area. The main pool can be a bit cold depending if they have done a water change but if you get an all access ticket the lazy river is well heated for kids and adults to warm up and a bit calmer for super small kids. Note: Men beware slip de bain or trunks only are permitted!!

Indoor laser game set over two floors. This smart little games room is great for kids of 6 and over. We say 6 because the laser packs are heavy and fairly big so can leave smaller kids struggling to wear them over their shoulders. In the same industrial area is an escape game room next door, a couple of small restaurants and a beer shop with hundreds to choose from. Adults might be worth taking a book unless you fancy joining in and shooting the kids.

The Saint Aulaye tree top adventure park is the smaller of the two locally. Kids are harnessed into the safety lines and can complete the tree top course mainly by themselves. If they get stuck there is an instructor on hand. As its under the trees and near the river beach this is nice to do in the heat of the day.

One of the best places to get fruit and veg from locally. The warehouse is not beautiful on the outside but the produce is awesome on the inside. Also inside is a large range of french wines and loads of world beers and a small bar on barrels. Bizarrely if you need to watch a sporting match they have a large screen in the bar too. Not bad for a family run veg shop!!

Amazing local butchers right on our doorstep. Locally sourced meats of a very high standard. Roast chickens cooked on a Sunday for aubeterre market day but make sure you book in advance. Ask the owners for their own chorizo or cured ham as these are amazing. The quality of the meat here far surpasses any local supermarket. We recommend the beef steak and local sausages made with pineau.
