Walking in Spišská Sobota

Prehliadka pamätihodností

A jewel of the Spiš Region (in German Zips), a former medieval town with its privileges, nowadays, a small village or, it would be better to say, one of the Poprad city districts, Spišská Sobota, with its atmosphere, is the right place where you can feel touch of history. St. George´s Church, at the main square, is dated back to back to the 13th century. Wooden Altar of St. George made by famous Master Paul of Levoča – the same Master who created monumental biggest late – gothic Altar of St. James in the world in this UNESCO town of Levoča – can be seen inside. A remarkable renaissance belfry tower and well-preserved row-houses, with typical architectural feature of a high wooden roof with long overhang above the street, put the finishing touches to this marvelous place. No wonder Queen Elisabeth II, during the first official state visit by a British monarch, attended St. George´s Church and walked around the Spišská Sobota square.
