Located on the Pleasant Ridge side of Wyman lake, the well maintained trail is a short walk to a very nice view. The parking lot is in front of the transfer station. Approximately a mile before the parking lot is the Pleasant Ridge boat landing with wonderful shallow swimming for children and pets.

If you're thinking about a road trip day of exploring, this may be a destination for you. On the way to Kingfield and/or the Rangeley area, you can drive over one of the last standing wire bridges in Maine. This is a great spot for a picnic and a swim.

Station Rd in Moscow will take you to the viewing site of Wyman dam. People fish below the dam and my brother claims he pulls Salmon from there. There is a nice spot across the field to hike down a bit and set up for a picnic.

Back woods moose hunt. You can take a car up the dirt road to the end of Stream road. Towards the end you will see the old radar site on your left. This area is one of the best locations for a potential moose sighting. I recommend dusk or early morning. If you want to continue past the Stream rd, I do suggest AWD and a vehicle with more clearance. If you head right you can make a loop over to Dead Water rd and back into Bingham. If you head left, you are headed towards Chase Pond. Bring a fishing pole, a map and some bug dope!

Road trips and hiking

A beautiful small town boasting several ponds. Make it a day trip and loop over to Greenville and see Moosehead lake and take rt 16 home to see the windmills. South of Jackman on rt 201 is a picnic area with a spectacular view. To the left of the picnic area is the Owl's Head Trailhead which is a short but fairly steep 0.3 miles to an even better view. Dog friendly.

This is what the backwoods of Maine is all about. I suggest 4x4 or AWD because these are dirt roads. Grab a Maine Gazetteer and go explore. Carry Pond Road will take you up Wyman lake and into the woods. You'll drive past the Benedict Arnold trail, which is a nice challenging hike with a lot of history. You'll drive past Pleasant Ridge boat landing and Houston Brook Falls trailhead. You'll drive past countless campsites and pull off spots to cool off in water. You can get to Otter pond. If you want to make it a true day trip loop, you can dirt road it all the way to Flagstaff Lake and loop back through Kingfield. That will take you right by the New Portland Wire bridge.

Looking for Moose?

They aren't as easy to find as they used to be but as a local, I can give you the best chance possible. First off, dusk and early mornings are the best times. Two of the best spots to see a moose are on Rt 201 on your way to my Wyman Lake rental. The first location is across from Baker Mountain. The second spot is on the left about 2.5 miles north of Baker Mountain. You go past a sharp corner with Fosters camps and at the top of the hill is a bog where they frequent. (There's also a family of bald eagles in this area). You can head up rt 16 past the wind mills. This road in notorious for moose
