Sightseeing

The commune of Saint Aulaye-Puymangou was created in January 2016 when the small village of Puymangou (where our gites are) was merged with Saint Aulaye. Saint Aulaye is a pretty Bastide town, founded in 1288, with a few parts of its ramparts still extant. A guided route (look for the fox on signposts) around the town includes a visit to the old bakery oven along the northern ramparts. There are restaurants and bars both in the town and down at the lovely, spacious river beach. The beach has life-guard bathing, canoes and an aquabranch to work of excess energy. The 11th century church is between the upper town and the beach and has a lovely view up to the Town Hall built as a chateau in the 13th century. In the town there is a museum of pastels and a museum of Cognac (there is a local Cognac from grapes grown in Puymangou).
