Texas has forests! Huntsville State Park has great hiking trails to get lost in the woods for a day. It's a easy hour drive from the house. Huntsville is also a cute college town with yummy and inexpensive restaurants to eat at post hiking.

It's a beautiful park in the woodlands with lots of family friendly trails. You can hike for hours or just go for a lovely picnic. There is also great playgrounds for children.
