There are great parks, food, and neighboorhoods that lead right into the mountain trails! Just take Balsam West and you will run into North Boulder park. If you continue West there you are bound to run into some Mnt Santias trails.

Spout water area on the Pearl Street mall for kids
Its near the east end of the mall near the judicial buildings.

North boulder park or Ebin G Fine park are both great
lots of play areas for kids, and in winter you can sled down the hill at EbinG fine park. There is also a skate park there.
Getting around
Best to rent a car but Uber/Lyft work too. Or a bike rental
We live about 10 minute drive from downtown and many of the hiking trails so best to be prepared!
