An interesting trip for the more adventurous is the Aurelia Gold Mine in Zlotoryia. Some of the corridors that were excavated around 1660, in the diabase rock under St Nicholas Mount, form the Underground Tourist Route. There are many secrets connected with the mine, during World War II, for unknown reasons, some of the corridors were deliberately caved in. It is also the reason why exploratory work is still being carried out to this day. In 1998, a further 27 metres of the “Karol” mine shaft were discovered, which are not open to the public. Even though the tourist route is only about 100m in length, it creates a unique atmosphere which makes it particularly interesting for tourists. Protective helmets are required as it involves squeezing through narrow and low tunnels. The name Zlotorya can be literally translated as "gold digging" and the town hosts the World Gold-Panning Championships every year on the last weekend of May.
