Visit to Dubrovnik

Visit to Dubrovnik is highly recommended for anyone staying at our place. Old Town is a main attraction while we also recommend using the cable car to go up the hill to get the best views The guide for the private tour that we recommend (possible discount on demand) https://bnc.lt/m/YC2INYfQngb?_p=c31529c69d1c66f0eb038cffef
Historical town of Dubrovnik is a must visit for all our guests. Situated only 20km away it is reachable both by car and local bus. We recommend visiting in morning or afternoon due to temperature that can rise high during summer months. We also advice you to visit on days when there are no cruise ships because it can get overcrowded and you don't want to spoil your time there. Ask us for the schedule of the ships. Old town is the main point of interest, almost unchanged from 17th century, it is one of the most special towns in the whole world recognized and protected by UNESCO more than 40 years ago. Leave yourself at least a day to enjoy the town. Tips: -if you are going by car, park it in the Public Garage, situated just a few minutes walk from the Old Town. If you want to park more close to the Old Town, it will be very hard to find a parking place and even if you do, it will get pretty expensive. - you can also go by public bus from Brsečine, it runs roughly once per hour and the ticket costs 17kn one way (for children under 7 it's free). Get out of the bus at first station after you pass the tunnel above the city. From there, you walk cca 10 minutes to the old town. On the way back, you wait for the bus on the opposite side of the road from where you get off. Buses run from the main bus station situated in the port. To get there from the old town, take bus number 1A, 1B, 3 or 8.

Best way to enjoy the town is to take a walk on walls of Dubrovnik. Almost 2km long, the walls surround the Old Town. There are three entrances so you don't have to make all the way. Besides breathtaking views of the town and the area, you will pass through six historic forts. We recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon due to high temperatures during summer months. There will be some ups and downs during your walks but you'll find few restaurants where you can refresh yourselves. We highly recommend you to buy 1 day Dubrovnik card, a voucher that can allow you to visit the Walls but also some of the city museums and to have a free public bus ticket for 24 hours, all on a discounted parts. The card can be bought in the tourist office just on the entrance to the Old Town.

One of the main modern attractions of Dubrovnik is its cable car that connects the Old town with Srđ hill above it. The ride takes only few minutes during which you can enjoy some aerial views of the town. However, the best views await you on top, you will be able to see all of Dubrovnik and big parts of Souther Adriatic, it is a perfect place for taking a photo that will highlight your visit to Dubrovnik :) There is also a nice restaurant "Panorama" where you can enjoy the best meals wit a view over Dubrovnik, highly recommended, especially in the evenings. Besides that, we recommend visiting the Homeland War museum that is just next doors from a cable car station. Dubrovnik area went through difficult war time only 30 years ago. Find out more about that time when the town was bombed on daily bases and almost destroyed in the attacks by Serb and Montenegrin occupation forces. Tip: if you want to enjoy the view but don't want to go by the cable car, you can get there by the road on your own. However, beware that the road is pretty narrow and challenging and it can get jammed during summer months.

Nature landmark

We definitely recommend visiting this incredible cave, one of the most unique in the whole Europe. It is never crowded and is off the beaten path.
Situated in the neighbouring country of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Vjetrenica cave is a perfect place to admire the underground beauties of this area. Its entrance can be found near the village of Zavala, on the southern slopes of Popovo field, 45 km drive from Brsečine. With more than 7 km of channels, almost 2 of which are covered by a lighted pedestrian path, this cave hides numerous speleological features – four permanent water streams, small periodical lakes and many speleothems (stalactites, stalagmites and columns). More than 200 different animal species live in the cave, more than half of them being endemic ones which makes Vjetrenica one of the richest in the world in aspect of biodiversity. If you decide to visit this unique cave, be prepared for low temperatures; average annual being only 11 °C. In addition, the main entrance is known for strong wind that gave the cave its name (vjetar in Croatian means wind). Tip: near the entrance to the cave, you can find a great restaurant "Zavala", situated in the former railway station building, that serves traditional food of the area IMPORTANT INFO: since the cave is situated in Bosnia and Herzegovina, GPS can direct you to local border crossings that foreigners are usually forbidden to use. Since that often often varies, be sure to check with us which road to use to be sure to get there

Beaches of the area

Brsečine area has many nice beaches that offer refreshment during hot summer months. The main one, situated in the village, is even reachable by foot, others are within 5 minutes driving. All these beaches have pebbles but if you prefer sand, there are sandy beaches on the island of Lopud, situated just in front of the village.
One of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Dubrovnik area is Veliki Žali, situated only 2km from your apartment. Its name translates as "big pebble stones", they are indeed bigger than usual here. Sea is very clean and suitable for children and non swimmers. Among other features, there is a beachfront restaurant and possibilities for different water sports. Parking is free and is available directly on the beach or on the main road, just few minutes walking.

Situated just beneath the village, Brsečine harbour is reachable both by car and walking. By car it takes only a few minutes but beware that the road is pretty narrow and usually packed with cars parked aside. Once you get down on the beach, you are free to use our private parking space (behind the big house) that is usually protected by the chain, just remove the chain and park inside. The beach is pebble stoned but sandy when you go deeper, it is suitable for children. You can rent a chair and a parasol as well as take a drink in the local bar "Para5" that is opened during summer months. If you are into cliff diving, there is a 3 m high dock from which you can enjoy it. The sea is crystal clear, especially near the few sea caves situated along the coast of the bay. Tips: we highly recommend walking to the beach, it takes 10-15 minutes from the apartment. You just go down the main village road and when you pass the highway continue straight next to an old olive mill and a seasonal creek. You will soon get to an historical cobble stoned path that connects the village with harbour. You will enjoy beautiful views of the bay surrounded by Mediterranean flora.

This beautiful little island (or peninsula, depending on tides) called Sjekirica, literally meaning "little axe" after its unusual shape, is a jewel of Brsečine area. It’s situated just north of the Brsečine bay. Its staggering beauty was captioned by number of photos many of which were used by Croatian tourist board as cover photo for number of brochures and campaigns. It’s shallow waters and mild stony coast offer you an opportunity for a really special swimming. It’s accessible from the main road by a small path, a walking that takes only few minutes. Appropriate footwear is mandatory and we recommend having swimming shoes if you have problems with a rocky coastline. If you don't want to walk there, you can just enjoy it from a distance, there is a viewpoint with a parking space in vicinity from where you can take a photo. We recommend doing it during sunset, the views then are more than amazing

The only real sandy beach of the area around Brsečine is situated in the island of Lopud (look on half day and day trips section on how to get there). The beach is ideal for children and non swimmers since the shallow waters stretch for than hundred meters away. There are couple of restaurants and bars as well as service for renting a chair and parasol. Important info - smaller part of the beach is nudist but they are always in smaller numbers Tip: if possible, avoid on weekends since it can get very crowded

Half day and day trips

Brsečine is an ideal outpost for many half day and day trips with something for anyone's taste. Islands of LOPUD and ŠIPAN, the ones you see from the apartment terrace, small and quiet with nice beaches; PELJEŠAC peninsula on the west, famous for its wine and oysters; island of MLJET with its world famous National park; small towns of CAVTAT and KORČULA with many beautiful beaches along the way, rural tourism region of KONAVLE... If you want to look even further, towns of MOSTAR and MEĐUGORJE in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as BOKA KOTORSKA bay in Montenegro are all reachable on a day trip from Brsečine.
Enjoy day or half day trip to Pelješac peninsula (max 1 hour drive in one way) Beautiful medieval town of STON is situated around 30km NW of Brsečine, at the very beginning of Pelješac peninsula. Ston is famous for its stone walls that stretch across the hills above it for about 5,5 km. You can walk by small part of it and enjoy the views of the town and nearby saltworks, the oldest still active in the world. Ston is also famous for its gastronomy, we recommend visiting some of the restaurants in the Mali Ston bay that are famous for its shellfish and oysters, on of the most prestigious of its kind in the whole world. Couple of kilometers further down the Pelješac peninsula, you will drive through famous vineyards that produce quality wines. We recommend visiting one of the wineries along the way and for further wine-tasting experience, we recommend visiting the only Croatian museum dedicated to wine making - situated in the village of Putniković. Tip: you can complete your trip by enjoying some of the most beautiful beaches of the area - we recommend Vručine beach in Žuljana or Prapratno beach, situated couple of kilometres from Ston.

Lopud is one of the Elaphite islands, a small archipelago that stretches along the northwest coast of Dubrovnik area. Looking from Brsečine, Lopud is the island on the left. Although not very big in size, it has a very long and rich history with number of old churches and historic buildings all around the islands. Several thousand people lived on the island in XVII century when it grew as a maritime center of Dubrovnik Republic. The beauty and uniqueness of Lopud is inversely proportional to its size. Considering the area of 4.63 square km, we can freely say that the beauty here is overpopulated. Circular bay beach with a layer of white sand and clear water are ideal invitations for every tourist. Lopud island has 11.5km of coastline, of which 1.20km are marvellous sandy beaches, only of a kind in Dubrovnik area. The most beautiful one called Šunj is situated in the southern bay, opposite of the main and only settlement. It can be reached either by walking path through lush forests (cca 20 minutes) or by electric cars service (Lopud is car-free island). Island has only one settlement with some restaurants, shops and bars and a 5 star hotel complex – they are all opened seasonally. Tips: from Brsečine bay, Lopud is reachable by the local boats in 10-15 minutes ride (on demand). You can also visit it by a ferry from Dubrovnik port or as part of a cruise – there are many organized daily tours operated by old wooden ships that will you drop you on three of the Elaphite islands, Lopud being one of them

The biggest and the most populated of the Elaphite islands, Šipan is the one on the right looking from Brsečine. It has two settlements connected by the only island road through small field covered in olive groves. Talking about olives, Šipan is the island with most olive trees per its size in the world which brought it inclusion into the Guinness book! Suđurađ is a village on the east coast, closest to Brsečine and Dubrovnik which makes it the point of entrance on the island by boat or a ferry. It’s typical old fishermen village with unique architecture with houses just by the sea and fort-like renaissance summer mansion. On the other side of the island, there is a village of Šipanska luka, also with unique rustic architecture The best way to explore the island is by cycling, there are many roads throughout the island that connect small hamlets, olive groves and hidden bays. If you’re looking for a more relaxing holiday, there are many nice restaurants in both of island villages, some of which can be approached only by the sea. Mljet is an island visible in the distance from our terrace. It is a perfect outpost for a day trip since it is home to one of the most beautiful national parks in Croatia. Two lakes with crystal clear waters surrounded by pristine nature and lush pine forests are perfect place for total relaxation. There are two ways to get there; 1. take a speed boat from the Dubrovnik port (line Dub rovnik - Polače). It will get you directly to the park from where you can rent a bike or walk to explore around. 2. drive to port of Prapratno, around 40 minutes drive from Brsečine from where you get on a ferry that will drop you in Sobra, central port of Mljet from where you need to drive to the park itself. On the plus side from option 1, you can see more of the island and its beautiful villages and untouched nature. Tips: - if you have time, be sure to visit beach Saplunara on the far east of the island, it is a beautiful sandy beach like no other in the area - if you are a good swimmer don't miss on trying to swim in a strong current that connects the two lakes -the ticket is 125kn per person (as of 2020), don't miss a boat ride to the small island in the middle of the lake since it is included in the price. There is an old monastery with a restaurant there but the peace and the quiet atmosphere by the sea is not to be missed - if you are coming by car, we recommend eating in the village of Pomena; you have a much better choice than in other places in the park
