Hiking and Mountain biking

There are great hiking and mountain biking trails basically out the front door! To hike or mountain bike from the house – walk/ride down to the beginning of Juniper Ave and you will see the Manzanita Fire Road off to the left. Follow this fire road into the Gary Giacomini Open Space Preserve and then the Marin Watershed preserve from there! There are hundreds of miles of trails including beautiful ridges and vistas, lakes and streams. Enjoy! These trails are where the sport of Mountain Biking was born!

City advice

What to pack

Hiking Safety

If you go for a hike, please be safe! Bring water, your cell phone, wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and always bring a flashlight and a few snacks just in case. We are not certain of cell service throughout the open space area, but better to have it then not. Just in case your phone service is not good or it is hard to read the map on your phone, it is better to have a printed map with you. Sometimes the fog rolls in as well at night or in the morning visibility difficult and a printed map is good to have on hand.
What to pack

Mountain Biking Safety

We recommend you check on-line or at a local bike shop for more information on the best way to stay safe while riding. Some of the hiking tips above apply – taking adequate water, snacks, map and flashlight. Also, be sure to have spare parts or tools to handle minor repairs and tire problems. In general use common sense – go slow and easy if you are not familiar with the terrain. Some trails are wide and easy, and some are challenging. Use your best judgement and be safe! And – enjoy the trails where Mountain Biking was born!
Don't miss

Poison Oak & General Backcountry Safety

There is a lot of poison oak in the area and on the sides of the trails. Depending on the time of year it can be either all green or green and red. There are also lots of deer, which you may see during your visit! Deer carry ticks which can also live on the foliage on the sides of the trails. As long as you stick to the trails and don’t go walking through the brush, you should be fine. Going off trail is not recommended! If you think you were exposed to poison oak, there is a special soap that you should be able to purchase at the local grocery stores or pharmacy.
