Johnny Sack was a German cabinet maker who came to the United States in his 20’s. In 1929, he leased a small piece of land at Big Springs from the Forest Service. He began building the cabin in 1932 and finished it three years later and added on to the house over the years. What makes this cabin so unique is not only the land he chose to build on but also the use of bark in the details of the house and his furniture. After Johnny’s death in 1957, the cabin was to be removed along with all the other private Cabins in the area. Through the efforts of interested citizens, the cabin and its colorful history was preserved. The cabin is maintained by a local non profit organization.
