Nose Hill Siksikaitsitapi medicine wheel: Nose Hill is a giant natural area in the middle of the city. Walk in the meadows and check out the recently erected medicine wheel, put up by the Blood Tribe. You may leave a small offering at the centre if you wish. Closest access is from the Nose Hill Park 14th street parking lot (on east side of park). Take one of the trails up leading west from the parking lot. A better option if you have a bit more time is to park at the Nose Hill parking lot at the Calgary Winter Club. Walk up the trail with stairs heading north/west. Then follow the trail north and north/east to reach the medicine wheel. This route offers a good workout and offers a little more of a natural prairie setting with great views.

Day Trip: Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump Drive south to a top notch interpretive centre about the natives who lived on the plains. One the way, stop by the Chuckwagon Cafe, where you can get burgers and all day breakfast in a little red barn. Stop by to see the Okotoks erratic, a 18 ton boulder that travelled to its present location via glacier, tens of thousands of years ago.

Drumheller and Royal Tyrrel Museum A desert one and a half hour drive east of Calgary, explore a very different geography and check out a world class dinosaur museum. Don’t miss: Horseshoe Canyon viewpoint, Atlas coal mine, Hoodoos Trail. If you have kids, go to Fossil World, the Largest Dinosaur in the world, and the spray park right beside the big dinosaur. It is usually several degrees hotter in Drumheller, and if it is raining in Calgary, it is often dry out east. Be sure to take the beautiful scenic route either there or back, not the google route. This route comes south out of Drumheller and goes through the town of Wayne. When you go through Wayne, stop at the Last Chance Saloon, which is a quaint, haunted bar from the 1900s. You can get a pickled egg or a cool drink, and you can play a game of pool.
