Oceanside is a cozy little hideaway located just off the Three Capes Scenic Route, South of Cape Meares, and North of Netarts. This community is built along an amphitheater-shaped hillside, overlooking a beautiful beach, and offers the ambiance of a quaint European village. Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge is located just off shore of the beach in Oceanside and can be viewed from the windows of most vacation rentals. Three Arch Rocks have been named individually as well. The largest is Shag, the small, most westerly rock, is Storm Rock, and the middle one has two names: Finley Rock and Mid Rock. At the northern-most end of Oceanside beach, is a tunnel through Maxwell Point. During low tides, the tunnel affords access to Tunnel Beach on the other side. Around the next point at the North end of Tunnel Beach, is Agate Beach, which can only be reached by going around the point on a minus tide. And yet another secluded beach to the North of the next point, during a minus tide, gives access to a natural cave which enters the cliff through one portal and forks into two exits near Short Beach, below Radar Road. This cave is called Lost Boy Cave, for a good reason, and its name provides proper warning to anyone venturing in when the tide turns.

The Kilchis Point Reserve is approximately 200 acres along Tillamook Bay in Bay City, Oregon. The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum (TCPM) owns, protects, maintains, and holds this land in the public trust. Kilchis Point is home to a wide variety of plants (flora) and animals (fauna) that together form precious ecosystems. Declared a County Heritage Site by the Tillamook County Commissioners in 2010, Kilchis Point is an important prehistoric and historic site. Kilchis Point was the site of one of the largest permanent Native American villages on the Northern Oregon Coast. Tillamook County’s first pioneer settler, Joe Champion arrived at Kilchis Point in 1851 and was invited by Chief Kilchis to live in a spruce stump next to the Native American village while he built a cabin. The Morning Star of Tillamook was built at Kilchis Point, making it the first ship built in Tillamook County and the first ship registered in the Oregon Territory. Kilchis Point was also the headquarters of the Whitney Lumber Company from 1919-1927.

This spring, two new outdoor-based recreation operations started business on Oregon’s Tillamook Coast. Shore Riders Fat Tire Bikes opened in Oceanside in March, offering fat tire bike rentals for beach rides on select beaches in Tillamook County. Oregon Coast Railriders (OCR) are opening in Bay City along the former Southern Pacific and Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad tracks starting May 26. “Tillamook County has enjoyed a rise in tourism over the last two years, so much so that more tourism-related organizations are setting up shop along this portion of the coast. People who come to the Tillamook Coast come for outdoor adventures and to experience nature first-hand,” says Visit Tillamook Coast (VTC) tourism director Nan Devlin. Shore Riders’ fat tire bikes are made for the sand, as they can more easily navigate the beach’s uneven terrain than one could do with a typical bicycle. Shore Riders offers rides upon request on any Tillamook County beach. Call to find locations or schedule your ride. Owners Tony and Sarah MacDonald note, “It’s a mobile service, so we can offer the rides anywhere along the Tillamook Coast. With 15 bikes, we can accommodate large groups. We have a big cargo trailer and will meet you wherever you want to ride on the beach in Tillamook County.” Shore Riders operates Tuesday through Saturday or upon request, March through October. Oregon Coast Railriders will operate in a different part of the Tillamook Coast, along the scenic railway. Owners Kim and Anita Metlen describe railriders, a semi-recumbent style of cycling, as “comfortable, adjustable and efficient to pedal.” Each railrider has two seats; each guest pedals independently of the other; and a guide accompanies the guests.
